Chapter 1 Left out in the Cold

The hospital corridor was crowded with people coming and going.

Francis Yule squatted at a corner and cried regardless of everything.

"Your mother's stomach neoplasm becomes cancerous. If you cannot collect 100,000 yuan for surgery, she could only live for another month at best."

The doctor's cold words were like needles that pricked his heart.

But Francis couldn't afford such expensive medical fees at all.

His adoptive father, Walter Yule, went missing on a boat trip a year ago while his adoptive mother, Betty Steinbeck, fell into a coma for stomach neoplasm and was hospitalized. Francis, a fresh graduate, became the backbone of his family.

In this year, to treat the illness of his adoptive mother, Francis not only spent all the family savings but also became a live-in son-in-law of Thompson Family, a superstitious practice to help that family to drive out evil spirits.

As humble as cow and horse, he rendered his service in Thompson Family in exchange for only half a million yuan.

The money soon ran out to pay off medical fees.

Now Francis only got a cell phone and ten yuan in his pocket.

"100,000 to go, 100,000 to go..." As the amount of money mentioned by the doctor crossed his mind, Francis fell into despair. Already at the end of his tether, how was he supposed to collect the money?

But he couldn't watch his mother die.

"No, I gotta borrow 100,000 yuan."

Francis wiped his tears, gritted his teeth, and stood up, "I cannot allow anything bad to happen to my mother."

He was determined to borrow money regardless of dignity.

His first destination was his uncle's home, and he knocked on the door.

His aunt opened the door with a straight face.

Francis desperately begged her for help, "Auntie, my mother needs money for surgery..."

"You come to borrow again? 200 yuan is not good enough?"

"Get lost, don't ever come again. We don't have such greedy relatives like you..." While cursing, his aunt pushed him out and then slammed the security door shut.

Angered by her mean words, Francis trembled all over and punched the wall.

He understood the fickleness of the world but didn't expect his uncle should be even unwilling to offer a tenth of help, but they already snatched the ancestral house from his father.

Without a choice, Francis had to bite the bullet and borrow money from other relatives. Unanimously they gave him cold shoulders.

They even warned him against any more harassment and threatened to call the police.

Then, the landlord called and claimed to take back Betty's room if the rent was not paid off within a week.

Internet loan companies called him one after another.

Francis had to toughen his scalp and call Rosie Thompson who was traveling in the Maldives.

As soon as he asked to borrow money, Rosie hung up the phone disgustedly.

This was it.

After standing on the street in the cold wind for a long time, Francis wiped his tears and went to Zero Bar.

This bar was opened by his ex-girlfriend, Jane Yale. To be more precise, it was his former roommate, Donny Hope, who lent her five million yuan to realize her dream.

Because of the five million, Jane left Francis and went into Donny's arms.

With the stunt of reserved campus belle, her business was booming, and the bar became a haunt among many second-generation-rich in Sea City.

Francis was a laughing stock here.

Although ashamed of showing up here, he had to walk into the Zero Bar for the sake of his mother's surgery fees.

He believed Jane would lend him 100,000 yuan given their old friendship.

Someone was playing guitar and singing in the bar. The atmosphere was very lively and tasteful.

Even the fragrance here made Francis feel inferior.

As soon as he got in, the entire hall fell into silence.

A dozen well-dressed men and women looked over.

Francis glanced at Donny and Jane.

From Donny's eyes, he read ambition, strong disdain, but no guilt even in the slightest.

Jane was wearing a low-cut vest, revealing her white belly, and a sexy miniskirt.

Her fair skin, long legs, and beautiful face were very eye-catching.

But her facial expressions were so indifferent and arrogant that many people didn't dare to look her in the eye.

With a poker face, she looked coldly at Francis like seeing a street dog.

Jane's homie, Queenie Yeats, jumped off a high chair, "Francis, what are you doing here?"

Her tone was contemptuous.

Francis plucked up the courage, "I'm here..." "We need no cleaners."

Queenie scorned, "Just go."

She had always been despising the impoverished Francis and also the matchmaker of Jane and Donny.

Francis waved his hand to explain, "I'm not here to be a cleaner but..." "28 yuan for a cup of lemonade, 180 yuan for a glass of cocktail. Can you afford it?"

Queenie sneered and taunted, "Even if you have some pocket money given by Thompson Family, we are not welcoming you here."

Donny booed, "Damn, unlucky day, we didn't check the almanac and happen to run into this live-in loser."

Donny and others already knew about Francis being a live-in son-in-law.

Amused by that, a dozen men and women burst into laughter.

"I..." Francis bit the bullets, went up and looked at Jane, but his speech was interrupted again by a pretty girl who shouted, "Take your dirty hands off. This is a leather sofa."

She even waved her hand in front of her nose as if Francis was from a smelly gully.

Like bitten by a snake, he immediately flinched and flushed with shame.

He had anticipated humiliation but not such ruthlessness.

He gritted his teeth and blurted out, "I'm here for Jane."

"Jane, let's talk outside..." Francis wanted to save his last bit of dignity.

Jane titled her long legs, and her white toes flickered under the light. There was no ridicule nor response, but that meant the greatest disdain.

The corner of Donny's mouth curved up in a contemptuous smile, "Jane is my girlfriend now and not someone you can easily find."

He even ostentatiously rubbed Jane's leg.

Francis's cheeks burned with shame, "Jane, I really have a business. Let's talk outside."

Jane gave no reply but looked at Francis arrogantly and indifferently like seeing a trivial ant.

"Get the hell out, you are disgusting."

Queenie was out of patience, "Don't be a killjoy."

Looking at Jane who showed him no respect, Francis was filled with disappointment and sadness. Even so, he forced out a few words, "Jane, I want to borrow 100,000 yuan from you."

Francis promised, "Rest assured, I'll pay you back and give you my ID card and graduation certificate as collateral..." "100,000?"

Queenie shouted exaggeratedly, "Francis, you want to borrow 100,000 yuan?"

"You are not even worth 100 yuan. How dare you borrow 100,000?"

Francis looked at Jane and explained, "My mother needs money for surgery... I know this is brusque, but there is a life I need to save, please."

He even took out his mother's medical records in the hope of touching Jane.

Donny looked at him like seeing a moron, "Your father is missing, and your ancestral house is taken by your uncle. Now you live in a rented house and is a live-in son-in-law without a job? Why would we lend you 100,000?"

In the past year after graduation, Francis had been busy treating her mother's illness and serving Thompson Family. He didn't even have the time to hunt for a job.

So, he was a loafer right now.

"As soon as my mother's survey is finished, I'll find a job and return the money."

Too ashamed, Francis just wanted to turn away but had to carry on since he had come to this point.

"Jane, I'm begging you. My mother really needs the money to receive the surgery..." At that moment, Francis felt as humble as a dog.

Queenie scorned, "Your mother needs money for surgery. Why should we care? We're not your father."

"Jane, please help me."

Francis looked at Jane and entreated, "I promise, I'll pay back the money."

People all glanced at Jane.

Jane looked coldly at Francis and spoke in a colder voice that made his heart sank, "You want to borrow money from me?"

"Don't you find it ridiculous? Your mother's life or death has anything to do with me?"

She sneered, "You wouldn't believe we still maintain the old friendship, would you?"

"Don't indulge in your own wishful thinking."

"No white swans would care about a toad."

Francis looked at Jane in shock. Never had he expected her to say such words.

"Our circle is not open to you."

"My money is also not open to you."

"I have no friendship with you at all."

"By the way, when we dated in the past, you sent you a piece of Tai Chi Jade when I got sick. You claimed it could ensure my safety."

"Now I return it to you so that you can use it to pray for your mother."

Jane fumbled through the drawer for a piece of Tai Chi Jade and threw it into Francis's hand with a poker face, "Now go, don't come here again."

"It's very inappropriate for you to show up at Zero Bar. You are causing trouble to me, Donny, and others."

Her voice was very peaceful and without the slightest arrogance but enough to tread people underfoot. Like a god, she was like watching an ant on the ground, "One should know his place."

Queenie pushed Francis away, "Get lost, toad."

Francis looked devastated.

Donny suddenly spoke, "I can lend you 100,000."

Francis's eyes lit up and his body trembled with excitement, "Really?"

Donny gave a playful smile, "Kneel."

Blood surged within Francis, and he showed a hint of anger in his eyes but soon calmed down.

Thud... Francis knelt straight.

His heart hurt even more badly than his knees.

But for the sake of his mother, Francis proceeded without hesitation.

"Ha-ha..." Queenie and others laughed coquettishly. Unexpectedly, the so-called backboned Francis would kneel before them.

Some people picked up their cell phones to record the scene.

Jane raised her snow-white chin like an arrogant princess and showed more contempt. What a spineless man!

Donny went to the bathroom and returned with a cup of yellow liquid before putting it in front of Francis.

"Kneel there and drink it."

Donny threw out a bank card, "And the 100,000 is yours."

Francis was stunned to see the liquid and then flew into a rage, "This is urine! You bastards!"

Francis threw the cup away, "You're going too far."

Amid screams, Jane and others got wet by the urine!

Donny jumped up in a rage and ordered, "Beat him!"

Francis turned around and ran.

Seven, eight dandies swarmed up.

Outnumbered, Francis was soon knocked down.

Leaning against the wall, he covered his head with his hands tightly.

His hands went numb, and he barely protected his head out of instinct.

Although his head was protected, his body was punched heavily, and he started bleeding.

Jane and Queenie cheered.

In their minds, Francis's revolt was outrageous, and the outcome served him right.

"Loser!"

Donny stepped on Francis's head.

Bang... Francis's hands that covered his head finally let go, and he slid down along the wall feebly.

He fell unconscious.

A stream of blood flowed out of his palm and seeped into the ancient Tai Chi Jade... Whoosh... a flicker of light flashed by.
