Chapter 5 Fake Painting
At six o'clock in the evening, Francis and Rosie came out of the traffic police brigade.
Rosie looked very embarrassed.
For the sake of leniency, she shouldered the responsibility as soon as she entered.
She didn't mention a word about Francis grabbing the steering wheel and was willing to shoulder all responsibilities, be it compensation or imprisonment.
The traffic policeman looked at her strangely before informing her of their free liabilities.
The accident was caused by the explosion of the dump truck's worn-out front wheel.
The traffic policeman even played the surveillance video and praised Francis for his prompt move.
If Francis didn't get them away from the place, they would have been crushed to death on the spot.
Rosie was stupefied.
Now she learned that she not only blamed the wrong person but should thank him.
Without Francis, she should have been dead.
After getting into the BMW car, Rosie wanted to apologize but worried about her reputation.
She grunted in the end, "Fortunately, the car accident has nothing to do with you, otherwise, you should have lived the rest of your life in prison."
Francis had been used to the stubbornness of the Thompson's, "I see. I'll be careful next time."
Just now, Rosie tried to take the 'blame' for him, which emotionally moved Francis. Although she looked down upon him, she still defended him in her heart.
Then he gently stroked the black box in his hand.
The box fell out of the Audi car. It was the very box with the code number 9981. Helen made a call and asked the traffic policeman to give it to Francis.
She insisted on asking Francis to accept it.
Francis didn't decline. Since he saved Xena's life, he deserved a gift.
As he thought of Xena, a flicker of concern flashed across Francis's eyes. One streak of white light was barely enough to restore her soul and could not guarantee her safety.
He was determined to visit the little girl tomorrow.
Upon hearing Francis's reply, Rosie veered the car to drive away, "Finally, you grow up."
Francis moved his eyes back from the distance and spoke while Rosie was in a good mood, "Rosie, in fact, I didn't talk nonsense. You are corrupted by murderous qi and will face a disaster. The car accident is a proof..." He reminded her, "You'd better throw the Buddha amulet away."
"Shut up!"
Rosie immediately pulled a long face, "Can you stop your nonsense?"
"This Buddha amulet was obtained by my mother when we were traveling. Do you mean my mom tries to harm me?"
Francis hastened to wave his hand, "That's not what I mean. Your mother might be plotted against by others..." "Come on, during travel, people don't even know each other. Why were there people scheming against Thompson Family?"
Rosie ended the topic sullenly, "The car accident was just a coincidence. Your disaster theory is complete nonsense."
"Another word about this, you get the hell off."
In her view, Francis was just grandstanding.
Francis felt helpless and stopped talking, lest Rosie should fire back. In the meanwhile, he tried to figure out a way to help her.
The Buddha amulet was sapping Rosie's luck and vitality. In another 10 or 15 days, her life would be threatened by death again.
He needed to fix this as soon as possible.
Screech... Half an hour later, the flaming BMW pulled off at the entrance of the Phoenix Hotel.
Why were they here?
Francis froze slightly and then patted his own head. Sam Thompson, his father-in-law, would spend his 50th birthday tonight.
Thompson Family booked a banquet at the Phoenix Hotel to celebrate.
"I forgot about dad's birthday. I'm going to buy a present..." Although Francis had been left in the wind in the past year, it was his father-in-law's birthday after all, so a gift was necessary.
"That won't be necessary, I've bought it."
x"My elder sister will also come today, so you'd better just zip your month before you humiliate me."
Rosie opened the trunk, took out a gift box, and walked into the hotel without looking back.
Francis thought for a while and got in with the black box given by Helen.
Although he hadn't opened it yet, it was from Helen as a life-saving gift. So, it should do as a present for his father-in-law.
Soon, Francis followed Rosie into the banquet hall of the birthday party. Tonight, Thompson Family invited a lot of relatives.
Nearly 30 people sat around three large tables. The scene was quite lively.
Her sister, Hedy Thompson, and her brother-in-law, Jason Hill, were also there.
But his father-in-law, Sam, and his mother-in-law, Quella Lewis, hadn't arrived yet. His little sister-in-law was studying abroad and could not make it back.
"Rosie, you are finally here."
"It's dad's 50th birthday. Why are you so late?"
"Although dad and mom dote on you, you should show your gratitude."
Noticing Rosie and Francis's arrival, Hedy came up with a smile and gabbled her greetings.
They didn't even care for a glance at Francis.
He didn't make a fuss.
But his brother-in-law, Jason, made things difficult as always, "Francis, it's dad's 50th birthday today. What gift do you bring?"
"Don't tell me that Rosie bought it."
"You eat, live with Thompson Family, and spend our money. On this special day, you should spend a fortune, right?"
"You are not coming empty-handed, are you?"
He gave a spurious smile and looked at Francis with resentful eyes.
Although Hedy was also a beauty, she was far inferior to Rosie.
Therefore, he deemed Francis who got Rosie a pain in the ass.
Francis replied calmly, "I've brought a present."
Rosie was surprised.
Rosie didn't know the traffic policeman delivered the box to Francis.
"Ha-ha, you bring the present?"
Jason laughed out loud, "Let me take a look. What did you buy?"
Before Rosie could react, Jason strode up and snatched the black box from Francis's hands.
He opened it.
A large ugly red Pepino melon like a dragon head was unveiled to the public.
"Present?"
"Pepino melon?"
"Given the poor package and ugly shape, the fruit should be from a stall."
"Yeah, the red color is scary. 100% forced ripening with chemicals. It's poisonous."
"Losers are losers. You bought such a five-yuan Pepino melon for dad's birthday?"
"Even if you like such a gift, you should buy a normal one. At a glance, I know this ugly stuff is a sham product."
"You're so perfunctory even during dad's birthday yet still have the nerve to be a live-in son-in-law? Divorce and get lost."
Jason and other relatives laughed out aloud with contempt in their eyes.
Rosie's pretty face stiffened. Sure enough, Francis made her lose face again.
She muttered bitterly, "Worthless!" Francis made no reply but stared at the Pepino melon in shock.
He had never expected Helen to give him such a priceless gift.
When Francis was motionless, the others thought he was ashamed to be exposed and booed again.
"Dumbass, check out my present for dad. A painting from Wu Daozi of Tang Dynasty."
Jason took out his gift, opened it, and put on air, "Bright Moon over the Sea."
"I spent a lot of effort to find this. It costs 330,000 yuan."
"As for its real market price, it should be more than tenfold."
"I even found some experts for an appraisal."
By dint of his present, Jason wanted to show off his superiority in front of those relatives. He found it inappropriate to flaunt directly and thus excused of comparing with Francis, "Francis, remember, when you give dad gifts, you should choose such high-grade ones."
"Don't try to fool dad and mom with such cheap booth goods."
The relatives of Thompson Family exclaimed with emotions. He was so generous to buy a gift worth hundreds of thousands.
In contrast, Francis's Pepino melon was ugly and far inferior.
"Brother-in-law, I admit that your gift is terrific."
Biting the bullet, Rosie tried to justify Francis, "We cannot compare the prices of the gifts for dad. The token of our regard is what matters."
She really regretted not noticing the box in Francis's hand, otherwise, she should have dumped the shabby gift into a trash can.
"Regard should go with sincerity!"
Jason sneered, "You eat and live with dad and mom. What, you are not willing to spend some money?"
"Apparently, you are perfunctory."
Hedy hid a dagger behind her smile, "Jason, forget it. Rosie hasn't been in an easy life but has to provide for Francis the loafer."
Everyone booed again happily.
Rosie's face flushed with shame, "Argh..." Although she served as President of the Dynasty company and earned millions each year. Her money was almost all taken away by her parents, and she had little spare money.
She couldn't really afford to spend hundreds of thousands on a gift.
"Rosie, relax, our gifts might be average but are real."
Just then, Francis said blandly, "We are way better than brother-in-law who bought a fake painting to celebrate the birthday."
The whole place fell into silence.
