Chapter 17 Unforgettable
Blake once asked him, "Zack, I don't understand. Why are you afraid of your father and dare not argue with him? You are not a common man."
Zack only shook his head helplessly, "Had I known the reason, I wouldn't have been afraid of him."
He spoke out the truth. If he had known the reason, he would be much braver in front of his father.
It was because his father had left a deep impression of being strict on Zack when he was only a little boy. As a result, he could not control his impulse to hide away in front of his father the same as what a thief would do in front of a policeman.
His father's beating him for the only time was an unforgettable experience. Until now, he could still remember the feeling when the belt whipped on his body.
That pain seemed to come from the soul.
Zack thought that Dorothy must have the same feeling being whipped as he had.
He said coldly a while later when he saw that Dorothy did not rise from the ground, "Stand up!"
Dorothy moved but did not stand up.
She was in a daze and felt being wronged. She thought Zack must do it to her deliberately to punish her.
She thought she might be wrong to come here with him. What she did not know was, she did not have another choice.
Anger occurred to Zack again when he saw Dorothy do not follow his words, feeling that this little bit of discipline he had inflicted on her hadn't served the purpose it should have, that she could actually turn a deaf ear to his words!
"You don't want to get up, right? Stay on the ground if you want to be whipped more. And I will make you satisfied!"
Saying that, Zack raised the belt once more.
Dorothy raised her head to look at him with grievance and confusion. He saw that but made no reaction.
Dorothy rose from the ground slowly.
Zack asked, "Do you know why I punish you?"
No response came from Dorothy.
Zack's tone once more became cold, "Now listen to the second rule. You must answer my question, or the punishment will be the same as arguing with me."
Dorothy looked at him, "I know."
"Then say it!"
"Because I did not cook the meal."
"Anything else?"
"Yes. I did not arrive here in two minutes."
She seemed to want to say something else, but she did not. Instead, she closed her mouth.
Zack looked at her, "Are you feeling wronged?"
Dorothy made no response once more.
"Answer me!" Zack raised his tone.
"Yes." Then she answered.
Zack sneered, "Don't mind that. You will be accustomed to it later. Don't feel wronged. You are an untamed wild horse and will cause trouble for the Whites if I don't teach you."
Dorothy lowered her head without looking at him nor speaking anything.
"Speak." Yet Zack was angry once he saw her behave like this.
"Say what?" She raised her head and glanced at him.
Zack thought he failed to teach her. It seemed as if his punishment did not work at all.
"Say that you know I do it for the sake of you!" Zack had to be patient to teach her.
"Yes, I know you do it for my sake," She said without any feeling in her tone.
Zack wanted to do something more to her, but he did not when he saw the blood and broken clothes on her back. And he wondered in his mind coldly, "Dorothy, I don't believe that I cannot tame you!"
He paced up and down before stopping to look at her, "There are several new rules for you, listen carefully. Rule No.1, you must serve me here at night before I go to sleep and you shall not sleep before I go to bed."
"Rule No.2, you must get up before me and prepare the breakfast."
"Rule No.3, without my permission, you cannot have meals on the same table with me."
"Rule No.4, don't let me find any dirt in the room."
"Rule No.5, you must answer my question!"
"Rule No.6, don't make me catch your mistakes."
"That's all at the moment. If I remember anything later, I will tell you. What you should be clear is that you will be punished once you break the rules."
Zack thought that Dorothy did not cook a meal because she was lazy. In his eyes, she was a stubborn woman who liked to argue with him. He set the rules for her to correct her shortcomings.
Dorothy listened silently without nodding her head or shaking her head, nor saying anything.
Zack was a little irritated at her silence, "Go and cook a meal now. If you cannot have the rice done this time, I will beat you to death."
Dorothy turned around and was about to leave when Zack called her, "Take away your clothes."
Then Dorothy picked up her clothes and went downstairs.
It did not take a long time before Dorothy came upstairs to tell him, "The meal is done."
Zack went down to the dining room and only saw one bowl of noodles on the table.
He turned back to him, "Why is there only one bowl?"
"I am not eating."
"You ate secretly just now?" Zack was angry once more, "Dorothy, how can you eat secretly when your master is hungry?"
Dorothy could not bear him anymore, "I didn't! I won't steal things from your house!"
"Then why you only cook one bowl of noodles?"
"I already told you I don't want to eat!"
"Go and cook!" Zack yelled, "Cook yourself a large bowl of it. If you cannot eat at all, you must have eaten secretly!"
Dorothy was enraged and ran to the kitchen. After a short while, she was back with a large bowl of noodles, and she bolted down her noodles after stirring it for several times.
Zack did not leave although he had finished his noodles. He stayed here to examine whether Dorothy had eaten secretly.
Dorothy had a good appetite. She finished her noodles quickly although the noodles in her bowl were more than that in Zack's.
Zack was a little ashamed as Dorothy proved with her action that she did not eat secretly, which meant that he was wrong.
He was a little guilty before Dorothy said deliberately, "Should I cook more noodles?"
