Chapter 8

"April" Karl suddenly stopped.

"This has nothing to do with what you said. I want to go with you on this mission, I can't watch people starve either so calm down" he spoke in a low voice to calm her anxiousness.

April saw his hand motions and took two deep breaths hastily like she was listening to him.

"But-" before she could continue, Karl placed his hand on the wall and it opened to reveal a conference room with people already sitting around the long conference table she suddenly stopped talking, her anxious expression quickly replaced with a warm smile. Even Karl had to applaud her in his heart.

"Mr. Karl, Miss Sanders, please join us" the Head of the Explorers Association stood up at once after seeing Karl and April open the door. The other members of the management also quickly stood up in respect. It wasn't because Karl and April wielded any authority because in face everyone seated around the table had more authority than the two of them combined. Their respect was out of admiration for their capabilities, it wasn't wrong to say that they were two of the main pillars on which the Explorer Association rested.

Karl and April both walked to the two empty seats beside each other that had been prepared for them and stood. They didn't seat first after all respect was reciprocal. The Head of the Association saw their actions and he couldn't help but straighten up with pride. Karl and April didn't get arrogant from the respect given to them but instead knew to return it, he was increasingly pleased with them and very much proud to say they were members of his association. He sat down and everyone followed.

"I am sure you both know the reason we invited you to join us at this conference today. Since you have already seen the statistical report then there is no need to beat around the bush anymore. We want you two to lead this mission to ensure its success or else the Survival Area will be facing a massive food shortage and that will disrupt the peace which we absolutely must avoid at all costs" the head of the Explorers Association was already white haired and seemed to be in his seventies but as he spoke, he words seemed to command authority and he seemed very healthy despite his advanced age.

"Sir, I accept this mission but I have a request" April quickly spoke up before Karl could say anything.

"Please say, Miss Sanders, we will do our best to fulfill it no matter how ridiculous it seems" the association head made a joke.

"Please prevent Karl from going on it with me" April immediately followed with her request ignoring the Association Head's attempt at a joke.

Her request surprised everyone at the table and they simply started between Karl and April. The relationship between the two of them was very well known to everyone so they couldn't understand why April who had always wanted to spend all her time with Karl would suddenly request to not allow him on the mission.

"May I ask why Miss Sanders?" one of the management officers on the table asked cautiously.

"I fear his presence will put my team at risk. As we all know, he is a First and none of us know if he had done something out there or if there is something about him that caused his team to be almost eradicated. I know my suspicion is a little farfetched but my life is too important to me and it is a risk I am unwilling to take" April didn't back down at all.

Everyone on the table exchanged glances, she said she knew her suspicion was far fetched? Far fetched? It was absurd! No matter how wildlife mutated, there was no way Karl could have offended the entire ecosystem and caused his team to be almost eradicated. Besides if it was possible for a human to offend the ecosystem why was she certain it was Karl? Wasn't she afraid that she or a member of her team would repeat the offense and offend it too? And then she went on to say she valued her life too much to take the risk but she was jumping at a chance to explore the Other Side and the wild it held. The same wild that claimed the lives of eighty percent of the human race. Her words made no sense no matter which angle one looked at them from.

"Miss Sanders, would you be okay with staying behind then and letting him go with the rest of the team?" the Association Head suddenly thought about something and decided to test his theory.

"Absolutely not! Why put the lives of our Explorers at risk by sending him with them? He should not be allowed to go for the safety of everyone" April immediately shut down the suggestion.

Everyone at the table suddenly smiled and exchanged glances. At this point, if they couldn't understand what was going on then they wouldn't have deserved their age.

"Miss Sanders, I am sorry to tell you this but our decision has already been made and cannot be changed. Karl knows more about the Other Side than anyone could possibly learn and you are needed to identify the best food sources and keep the team alive. Both of you are the best we have and the only team we can send. If we had someone else qualified for it then we would have assigned them and not asked you to go" The Association Head tried to sound as reasonable as possible after all, April was well known for being difficult to get along with.

"Wait, you mean we didn't even have a choice in the first place?" April suddenly caught on to something else.

"April, relax we'll be fine" Karl could no longer allow her to continue extending the meeting unnecessarily after all the Association had already shown them great respect by gathering everyone here to inform them when they could have sent one person or even just sent them a notification.

"We accept the mission" Karl spoke up and the Association Head dismissed everyone. They were to leave the day after April Grandfather's party which was in four days
