Chapter 1 He Owed No One Any Favor
When the sophisticated cold instrument came into view, Brittany Jarvis was instinctively frightened.
"Miss Jarvis, you can lie down now."
The doctor in a white gown reminded her in a warm voice.
Brittany came back to her senses, hummed, and clumsily climbed onto a white bed.
She closed her eyes and comforted herself. It was okay. Just marrow extraction. She could save someone's life and accumulate virtue by doing this.
She thought to herself. When the sharp needle pierced her skin, she flinched and helplessly clutched the bedsheet.
A syringe slowly drew the crimson liquid. The equipment extracted the stem cells, and the blood was transfused back into her body from the other end.
Thankfully, it didn't hurt. Brittany bit her lip and anxiously waited for it to be finished.
After some time, the doctor's voice finally reached her ears, "Thank you, it's done."
Her forehead was covered with a cold sweat. She opened her eyes and felt relieved as if she had gone through a disaster.
The stem cells were quickly carried to the operating room by the medical staff. She struggled to get up but felt dizzy. Her legs felt weak, and she sank back to bed.
"Miss Jarvis, your marrow was just drawn. Exhaustion is a normal reaction. You should recuperate in the hospital for some time."
The doctor came over and handed her a cheque, "By the way, the patient's family asked me to bring you this. They hope you'll accept it."
Brittany glanced over and instantly widened her eyes. Two million yuan! They were so generous!
Needless to say, the donee must come from a rich family.
Despite the appeal, she pushed the cheque away and struggled to get up, "I can't. I volunteered to donate my marrow. How could I take any money?"
"It's just a token of their regard. You don't have to reject it." Intentionally or unintentionally, the doctor glanced at her shoes blanched from washing. When she got off the bed and put on her shoes just now, he noticed several big holes in her socks.
Brittany noticed his gaze, blushed, declined again in a low voice, and hastened out of the ward.
--
"She rejected it?"
In the corridor of the hospital, Harold Mullen furrowed his brow. There was a hint of confusion in his deep eyes, "Leroy, you're not lying to me, are you?"
"I'm an honest man. Have I ever lied to you?" The doctor removed his mask. A handsome smiling face was then revealed, "I tried to persuade her, but she wouldn't accept it no matter what, nor was she willing to stay in the hospital for recuperation. I couldn't force her, could I? Such a kind-hearted and principled girl is really hard to find nowadays."
Harold squeezed the cheque with a complicated expression.
When the marrow was drawn, he went to see the donor.
Through the window of the ward, he saw a slim girl lying on the bed. Her face was ghastly pale, a sign of her fear. Even so, she forced herself to be strong although she was shuddering like a lamb to the slaughter.
He took several glances at this interesting girl.
The girl looked kind of cute. Her cheeks were tender and fair. Her eyelashes were long. Her eyes were as shiny as obsidians. Her thick hair was like a cascade. Overall, she looked like a pretty barbie doll.
But her dress style was not that good. Her floral blouse looked rustic. Her bell-bottomed jeans were like from last century. There were even two holes in her socks. Her tender toes stuck out. Suffering from mysophobia, he couldn't bear the sight.
Those around him were all exquisitely dressed celebrities and noblewomen. He had never met such a sloppy woman before. Her baby face was wasted.
He originally wanted to fill in one million yuan on the cheque. At the thought of her broken socks, he felt sorry for her situation and doubled the amount.
He rarely took pity on anyone. Unexpectedly, that bumpkin didn't appreciate his kindness and even refused to recuperate in the advanced ward arranged by him!
She couldn't even afford a pair of new socks and still adhered to her principles. Was she brain-damaged or something?
Harold thought for a moment and made a quick decision.
He had never owed anyone any favor.
So, she had to accept the cheque!
