Chapter 4
Helen had been led to the bathroom by Malaya. She washed up, changed into clean clothes, and sat alone in the office. In the bathroom, Malaya had blamed her for her impulsion. In their occupation, she couldn't avoid being looked down upon and taken advantage of. It was better than poverty. She should have endured it. Once the wine party was over, no one would actually do anything to them.
It made sense. What was the big deal? She should have endured it for the sake of money. After all, she was pinched.
The thought of money pricked Helen's heart. Just because she was hard up, when that scoundrel got physical, she swallowed her pride and endured it. However, when he got close and tried to kiss her with his smelly mouth, she lost it.
Which was more important, money or dignity? To maintain dignity, she beat that scoundrel. If Riley fired her because of this, she would have no money. Her dignity would eventually be trampled down. It made no difference.
Helen subconsciously clenched her fists. The pain caused a cold sweat to break out. She extended her hands and saw blood oozing out of the blanched wounds.
The door opened. Attended by a group of people, Riley came in, waved off the others, and only kept two by his side.
Instead of accusing her, Riley instructed a good-looking man who was half a head shorter than him, "Jake, go and bandage her up."
With a medical kit in his hand, Jake Grant walked to Helen's side, spread her hands that had been placed on her knees, and examined. Both of her hands had been cut. The most severe wound was in the center of her left palm. Broken pieces of the glass hadn't been completely removed, and her hands had touched water. The wound was still bleeding, and there were signs of infection. Probably, a scar would be left there.
"I'm going to remove the residues for you. It will hurt a little. Bear the pain." Jake sounded like a gentle doctor.
Not daring to raise her head, Helen watched Jake's movements attentively and silently. She was aware that Riley was sitting across from her and watching.
Jake took out the tools and deftly cleaned her wounds. The air was flowing quietly and slowly in the office.
"How old are you?" A cold voice broke the silence.
Helen was tall, but without the cover of her heavy makeup and the dim lights, her immature face totally gave away her age. Riley's suspicion was aroused.
Because she was suffering from the pain or startled by the sudden voice, her hand held by Jake trembled.
Instead of raising his head, Jake steadied her hand and continued to focus on his work.
"Twen..." Helen paused and then corrected herself, "17."
Riley's penetrating eyes glanced at Xavion, the manager of Prime Time.
Xavion panicked and hurriedly explained, "Her credentials are complete. We didn't check if her ID were real. Malaya introduced her to me and told me that she needed money. She looked so pitiful, and I temporarily hired her. No trouble has been caused in the past two weeks since she worked here."
"Pitiful? Is Prime Time a charity house?"
Xavion shut his mouth. This girl brought him great trouble. Since she was introduced by an acquaintance, he hadn't been careful enough. Now a disaster brewed.
Riley threw the files to the floor. "You're young and bold. Do you know the consequences?"
"Except for my age, the other information is real." Helen got anxious and forgot about fear, "I'm really pinched."
Riley snorted, "Am I obliged to make things convenient for you?"
Helen was rendered speechless. Riley continued, "The losses today will be deducted from your salary. Pay the balance when you have the money."
The chances were slim, but Helen ventured to ask, "Can I stay?"
Riley ignored her question and instructed Xavion, "I don't want to see her face again. Have the losses counted. If such a thing happens again, you will step down."
Xavion heaved a sigh of relief. He rejoiced that he was not punished and trotted away.
Jake finished dressing Helen's hands, saw her swollen cheeks, and went on to reduce the swelling.
Riley impatiently checked the time.
Helen speculated that Riley was in a hurry to leave and thought that it might be a chance. Despite her inner struggles, she looked at Riley and asked, at the risk of being misunderstood, "Can you recommend a job that I can make quick money? I want to pay you back as soon as I can."
Following her speech, even Jake stopped the treatment and looked at her. Riley's face turned frosty. His words were full of contempt and mockery. "Lie down and sell yourself."
Although Helen had gotten psyched up, his biting words still pricked her heart.
Just as rumored, Riley was cold-blooded and ruthless.
She was such a fool to ask for his help.
The scolding served her right!
