Chapter 1 A Trickish Enemy

It was cold late at night in late autumn. Pavel Stone walked in an alley, frowning upon the barks.

A black car parked deep down the lane, and the front lights were on. As Pavel got in the car, a man delivered him a photo.

The young man in the photo was wearing a police uniform, his eyes deep and cool. His chiseled face and the uniform showed he was a decent and upright man.

The person on the car said to Pavel, "The man is called Tristan Lewis, the newly-appointed head of the homicide division. Don't confront him unless you have to."

Pavel stared at the photo as he pinched it. "Sound capable."

The man who had a naevus on the corner of his lips was in his early forties. "Capable or not, he's definitely a psycho."

"Wow, I didn't expect such a comment. Guess I should avoid meeting him." Pavel put the photo down. "What's the next mission?"

"We noticed a lot of modified firearms on the market recently, so I want to know their origin."

Pavel pondered for a moment and replied, "You'll have the answer in three months."

After leaving the lane, Pavel walked along the side of the road before getting into his car.

It was already eleven o'clock in the evening. He could only hear vehicles passing noisy, nothing else.

The Realm was known as a special residential property for the rich, located in the center part of the city. One could easily tell how luxurious it was through the decoration.

A golden dragon embellished the fountain at the entrance. The moment Pavel parked the car on his parking spot, he heard someone running behind him.

Pavel turned his head and saw a little girl with short, shoulder-length hair in a red sweater running over tearfully.

"Alexis." Pavel knew her, so he walked forward and grasped her arm. "Why are you outside late at night?"

Alexis Miranda was probably around 12 or 13. She held back her tears when seeing Pavel, and then she answered as she sobbed, "I, uh, I went to buy a pack of cigarettes for my father, but I'm afraid to be here alone in the dark night."

"At this time?" Pavel stroked her hair, noticing her red eyes, "Have you bought it? Let me send you home."

Alexis sniffed, "Thank you, Pavel."

"Don't mention it." Pavel sent her to Unit 13 and then returned to Unit 19, the opposite building where he lived.

Turning on the TV, Pavel watched the News Night program of the local channel.

It was about the reform of the new public security policy. To echo the action of overcoming the accumulated death cases, the local safety government decided to set up a case investigation team to deal with the backlog cases they hadn't solved for years.

The head of the team only showed his face for a second as if he didn't want to be interviewed.

Pavel was amused. Given how vigorous they started the program, wouldn't they embarrass themselves if they failed in the next few months?

The reporter was still looking for the head of the team, saying excitedly, "We have many families of the victims whose cases remained unclosed yet. Let's talk to the head of the team and see how he plans..."

Unexpectedly, a man gestured to refuse the interview before the reporter went over. He also summoned a police officer and ordered with a gloomy face, "Who sent the media here? Tell them to leave right away!"

As the man's cold voice fell, he got in his car and drove away.

Pavel poured himself a glass of red wine, sipping while watching the reporters leave embarrassedly. He couldn't help thinking, "Why doesn't he want to be interviewed? Is he worrying about being beaten once he fails the public?

Pavel turned off the TV, took a shower, and then lay in bed. Having a pad in hand, he opened the Night Fell forum. Only the insiders would know the exact contents of the forum. Specifically, the users on this website were mainly troublemakers who would like to make a mess at night.

Someone preferred to pick up the drunken ones and have sex with them afterward.

It was an open secret among the demi world. Considering they all staged skirmishes that were basically borderline legal, they wouldn't report each other. In that case, some people favored trading their transactions which were supposed to confuse the public.

Pavel looked for information about private transactions of firearms.

Everything came to him who waited. He found a post about marking the resale of guns, yet the address was vague.

The next day.

"That's right. The store has been open in the alley in Otis Street for many years."

When Pavel came to the end of the alley with his phone in hand, he finally saw the wedding photography store called Color Lantern.

It looked like the storefront hadn't been renovated for a long time. Also, although it was a wedding photography store, the owner had all kinds of costumes for cosplay in the window.

"Thank you, man. I'll buy you dinner this evening." Pavel hung up the phone and observed the decorations.

A woman in her thirties was ironing clothes in the store. She was a little portly, her hair in large curls and bright red lipstick.

Pavel went in and asked politely, "Excuse me, may I ask, are you the boss here?"

The woman's eyes lit up as she saw a handsome guy at the door. "How can I help you, handsome?"

Pavel wore a big smile, "I'm here for Matt." The person used the name on the forum.

"Matt, you mean Matthew." The woman was in a good mood when seeing his smile, so she put down the iron and replied nicely, walking out to continue the conversation with him. " He's out taking pictures. What do you want with him?"

Pavel continued, "I heard his photos were cool, so I'm here now."

"Oh, trust me. You'll look gorgeous no matter who your photography is." She pointed upstairs. "He'll be back soon. Would you like to learn about our styles first? Let me show you."

Pavel didn't refuse her proposal. Following the woman upstairs, Pavel didn't resist the woman who the latter rubbed against him from time to time.

Somehow, Pavel had a feeling that the second floor was gloomy, especially the spot where the dressing-table was covered with a white cloth.

The woman stood sideways to block his view, looking at him. "That's the utility room, handsome. How old are you, by the way? 20 maybe? You are no longer at school, are you? Where do you work?"

Pavel wore a hat, which turned backward, and sports clothes today. His young and pretty face was with fascinating charms. Although he looked like a student, his expression had revealed that he was a playboy.

Pavel smiled at the woman and chatted with her occasionally.

The woman didn't leave until Matthew went back.

Matthew wore glasses, seeing like a raunchy artist. The photographic bag in his hand was new, but his clothes looked scruffy.
