Chapter 12 An Expressionless Face
Daniel looked at the little girl who was about to cry due to grievance. He tightened his mouth and showed no expression.
It was true that her grievance was shown to a tee and people who saw her would find their hearts were aching for her.
And there were tears in her round eyes as if she was about to cry next minute.
However, a sly grin was hidden in her eyes. She was like a cunning fox who played with her prey.
Daniel raised his head and stared at that anxious middle-aged man. There was a cold warning in his eyes and an aura of a man of superior surrounded him.
"NO, it is just a misunderstanding." That middle-aged man justified himself with a pale face. And terror stroke him.
What a horrible expression in Daniel's eyes.
After glancing at Daniel, the middle-aged man shivered as he felt a surge of coldness spread his whole body and finally penetrated his bones. It was like that he fell into an endless abyss.
He could not think of anything else but to turn back and run away immediately.
And he fell on the ground due to great anxiety.
But he dared not stay there for another minute even if his knee hurt due to that fall. He struggled to rise from the ground on his hands and knees, then he ran away.
Katherine shook her head with despise seeing that man running away as if there was a demon chasing him.
She wondered why a man of his kind should dare to cheat kids. It made traffickers seem to be a low-end career.
"Are you okay?" Emma looked at Katherine with appreciation in her eyes, "I remember that your name is Katherine? Are you scared?"
"Not really." Katherine shook her head slightly.
Katherine loosened her grip on Daniel and clapped her hands as if she were knocking the dust out. And she drew back several steps and raised her head to look at Emma, "Thank you, teacher."
Gone were the tears in her eyes and the scared and aggrieved expression on her face. Katherine became calm again.
"I thought you didn't recognize me." Emma lifted the corner of her mouth, "You didn't join us learning how to make an egg tart and sat away alone. Don't you like it?"
"Because I know how to make one," Katherine explained.
"I see. I thought you may find my class boring." Emma held Daniel's arms with a sweet smile and looked a bit confused, "But, why did you call us uncle and aunt when you knew me?"
Katherine responded with no words but a smile.
That was because you didn't look like a woman who was horrible enough to stop the trafficker. And the man beside you who was expressionless and seemed to be cold-blooded was the better choice to frighten that trafficker.
"You must be so scared at that time." Emma could not read the meaning in Katherine's eyes and only regarded her as a frightened child. And Emma's heart was aching for Katherine, "Why are you here alone? Didn't your parents come to pick you up? Where is Miss Lee?"
"Miss Lee is fetching her phone." Katherine pulled the straps of her bag and turned to Daniel who did not speak a word. Then she bowed slightly to him, "Thanks for your help. I did not mean that you were disgusting before. It was just an analogy. Hope you don't mind that."
"Before? Daniel, you met her before?" Emma looked at her brother with surprise.
"No." Daniel moved his lips and uttered an emotionless sound while he was looking at Katherine.
The little girl did have a good memory, he thought.
It was true that he recognized Katherine when she hugged his legs—She was the little girl who compared him to a wretched and bossy guy in the elevator of the airport.
"That's great." Katherine nodded her head with satisfaction.
"Kathy." Miss Lee ran to her and was out of breath, "I am sorry for keeping you waiting for so long, I --"
Miss Lee was about to explain that she had gone to the restroom when she saw Daniel, who was handsome yet expressionless, standing in front of her. Miss Lee blushed immediately. And her heart raced uncontrollably, "Mr... Mr. Brook."
"Miss Lee, since you are here now, we are leaving." Emma smiled at Miss Lee and went towards the car on the other side of the road, arm in arm with Daniel.
"Ah-Yes, goodbye Mr. Brook. See you, Emma." Miss Lee hurried to farewell to them.
And Miss Lee seemed to be frustrated with the lights in her eyes dimmed when she looked at the backs of Emma and Daniel, who seemed to be a pair.
Katherine shook her head and frowned upon Miss Lee, who wore a look that she had been touched but she had no chance.
What a secret admirer of Daniel--
However, she was better than Taylor. Taylor only cared about her work.
On the other side, Daniel had driven his car and turned right to the main road and Emma sat in the front passenger seat. Yet she kept gaping at the man who was driving with a thoughtful look.
"What do you want?" Daniel did not look at her but asked.
"Daniel, you and that little girl, you have met each other before?" There was the excitement of hearing gossip in her eyes, "And it sounded you didn't have a good time?"
"You have had much talking with Leon recently?" Daniel glanced at her.
"No!" Emma opened her eyes and licked her the corner of her mouth, "Why are you mentioning him? Don't change the topic."
"Because now you have the same brain as he does."
"What?"
Emma was stunned for decades of seconds before she realized that Daniel was saying that she was getting more stupid.
But it seemed that he was true. How could Daniel have any conflict with a five-year-old girl?
"I met her at the airport last time," Daniel explained with patience as if he had seen through what Emma was thinking.
"Did you notice her upturned eyes? They are beautiful. Her eyeballs are so round and black, like perfect black pearls. And when she blinks, no one can say no to her." Emma crossed her hands and put them under her chin, "Besides, I feel her eyes familiar, as if--"
"You would say words like this whenever you saw something beautiful and wanted to bring them home." Daniel interrupted her directly.
"...But I am serious with that familiarity this time." Emma murmured and could not justify herself as Daniel said the truth.
"She is a real kid. Don't cheat her and bring her home." Daniel stopped the car as it was a red light. And he turned to Emma when he said so with a stolid face.
"I know!" Emma puffed out her cheeks, "I am not a trafficker."
Emma touched her nose. And her eyes lit up as if she had thought about something, "But I can send desserts to kindergarten by myself. Thus, I can often see her."
"Don't do anything improper!"
"Okay, okay! Don't worry. I won't do anything against the law!" Emma shook her hand and nodded her head.
Yet, she did find familiarity in that girl's eyes. And she seemed to know her for many years.
