Chapter 13 What an Eloquent Girl
Varieties of trees and plants could be seen anywhere in a Chinese Garden style yard.
A little fall of spring rain mixed the smell of grass and flowers.
"I used to regard European style buildings as the best design. It seemed that I was the ignorant man." Simon was mesmerized by the scenery around.
Finally, his eyes fixed on the glass tank near the fountain. In the tank were models of mountains, trees, and buildings, which made it look the same as a miniature world.
"That is a 3-D miniature of Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival, a great painting of ancient China." Taylor followed his gaze and explained.
"How do you know that?" Simon asked. And he could not wait any more, taking out his phone to take a picture.
"I have seen that before." The corners of her mouth curved up.
In her home, there used to be a similar glass tank which was also a 3D miniature of the painting.
What made them different was, the miniature of the mountains, trees, people, and buildings in her home was made from crystals of different colors.
"Taylor, what are you thinking about?" When Simon finishing taking photos, he turned back and found Taylor staring at him blankly.
Taylor regained her composure after hearing Simon's words.
And she shook her head with a slight smile, "Nothing. I was just thinking about how long it takes if I want to make one with crystals. Let's go. We should focus on what we should do today."
The yard covered a large area. It took Taylor and Simon twenty minutes before they arrived at the main building.
When they approached the building, a man in his fifties came out, "Who are you looking for?"
"Hi, I am Simon Kint from Happy Summer Jewelry Studio. May I see Mr. Oscar." Simon said politely and handed his business card.
The housekeeper accepted Simon's card and had a look. Then he said with regret, "I am sorry. Mr. Oscar was meeting an old friend and was not available now. please go home and wait. I will tell him that you come to see him today. When he is free, he will call you."
"But--"
"Excuse me, I saw the Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival near the fountain when we walked here. And I am interested in that. May I ask if it is Mr. Oscar's design?" Taylor suddenly interrupted.
"You recognize that?" The housekeeper looked at her with surprise.
"Yes." Taylor nodded.
The housekeeper seized her up and said, "Please wait for a moment. I will ask Mr. Oscar to you." And he turned and walked to the hallway.
"Is that a password?" Simon looked at Taylor with surprise.
"I don't know." Taylor shrugged slightly.
And she stared at the leafy ginkgo tree nearby, lost in thought.
She still had the memory that her father built the miniature himself when she was five years old.
The housekeeper returned two minutes later.
"Please follow me." The housekeeper bowed slightly to Taylor and held out one hand, indicating that they could enter the room after him.
Taylor gave a start when she saw the man sitting on the rug of the living room.
Daniel?
How could he be there?
Daniel was the old friend of Mr. Oscar mentioned by the housekeeper?
"You recognize the painting?" Mr. Oscar was also sitting on the rug, with Go board in front of him.
Mr. Oscar gave the jade stone a gentle stroke and looked at Taylor's face. More accurately, he was looking at the mole beneath the corner of her eye. Mr. Oscar frowned, "What's your name?"
"Taylor Wood."
Daniel, who did not look up before, raised his head on hearing this name.
And he looked at Taylor's face without showing any feelings.
"Wood?" Mr. Oscar was in a daze. After looking at Taylor up and down, he put on a shallow smile and turned his eyes to Simon, "I know why you come here. But I have retired and all I want is to enjoy my life."
Bruce Oscar was the jewelry appraiser who enjoyed an international reputation. Any jewelry he issued an appraisal certificate would have its price increased.
Twenty years ago, he was also a famous master of jade gambling who had never failed due to his professional and unique perspective.
Six years ago, Bruce retired from his Appraisal Office and started his journey all over the world. He was back in the country the day before.
He was not old at all. He was in his forties.
And people always called him "Mr. Oscar" with politeness to show their respect for and acknowledge of his achievements and capability in appraising the jewelry.
Simon wanted to invite Mr. Oscar to work as the jewelry appraiser in his studio and thus paid a special visit today.
Yet Simon was refused before he spoke out his intention.
"Every gem is hidden in an unspectacular stone after being tempered for thousands of years. We have the responsibility to uncover the beauty of every jewel which is the same as exerting everyone's value. Mr. Oscar, you said that twenty years ago."
Taylor curled her mouth and added in a soft voice, "Mr. Oscar, pearls are everywhere but not the same as the eyes. And you are the one who can pick them up from stones. There are a lot of jewels waiting for you to find and pick them. Mr. Oscar, it would be a pity if you retire now."
"What an eloquent girl." Bruce looked at her and suddenly burst into laughter.
"Thank you." Taylor smiled.
"If my answer is yes, how much will you pay me annually?" Bruce put the stone down on the board and raised his brows.
Simon was stunned at Bruce's question.
He did not anticipate that Mr. Oscar would ask such a direct and realistic question.
"Our studio is just started and it's true we cannot offer you much money. But believe us that we will not let you down." Taylor tidied up her hair around her ears and chuckled, "If you don't mind, I can send you a miniature of Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival made of crystals by myself."
She stared at Bruce and her eyes were as clean as the water in a pond which would be waving in a breeze.
Daniel frowned suddenly.
Raising his head, he looked at the smiling woman and tightened his mouth.
As he was breathing, he could sense a pleasant, sweet, and milky smell. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
When he realized what he had done, there was an annoying expression appearing in his eyes.
"You are clever." Bruce chuckled and put on a look which nobody could read, "You know that painting is special to me and use it as your decoy. I--"
"Uncle Bruce." Sounded a nice female voice from the door.
Abby was just like a beautiful and proud dancing butterfly when she walked into the room in a red braces skirt. "I am Abby Wood from SS Jewellery. I come here today to invite you to work as our chief jewelry appraiser."
And when she looked at Daniel, she put on a sweeter smile and her eyes lit up, "Daniel, I didn't know you are here too."
