Chapter 9 Feeling Uneasy
Mrs. Hunter was very talkative, and she kept picking vegetables for Dorothy, saying, "Dottie, make yourself at home, and be free to pick anything you want to eat."
After the meal, Zack turned upstairs, while Dorothy followed Mrs. Hunter to clean up the kitchen.
In the evening, Dorothy and Mrs. Hunter slept together. Mrs. Hunter told her a lot of precautions and talked about Zack's preferences.
She said, "Zack often goes out for business. When he is not at home, you just need to guard his home. Don't let people you don't know come in. No one comes here except Oliver and Blake."
Dorothy asked, "Mrs. Hunter, who is Oliver? And who is Blake?"
Mrs. Hunter said, "Oliver's full name is Oliver Reed. He is a good friend of Zack. Blake's surname is Cotton, and she is Zack's girlfriend."
"His girlfriend?" Dorothy asked in confusion, "Does he have a girlfriend?"
"Of course. Zack is so handsome. Don't you think he has a girlfriend?" Mrs. Hunter smiled and said, "They are very intimate. But Blake only comes here when Zack comes back
"Oh." Dorothy responded, lowering her head and thinking for a while, then asked, "Mrs. Hunter, will Oliver come here usually?"
Mrs. Hunter said, "Oliver doesn't come here frequently. But once Zack comes back, he will come and stay here for several days!"
"I see."
Mrs. Hunter continued, "Zack is very easy-going. You can tell him directly about anything you need or what you need to buy."
Dorothy nodded, "Okay."
Mrs. Hunter added, "Every time Zack comes back, he puts the money for buying vegetables in the desk drawer in the corner of the living room upstairs. You can just take it there, and tell him if there was nothing left."
"Oh." Dorothy nodded again.
The next day, Zack went out and said that he would not come back for lunch.
When Mrs. Hunter and Dorothy were having lunch, the doorbell rang suddenly.
Mrs. Hunter went out and saw a fellow from her hometown.
The fellow hurriedly said, "Mrs. Hunter, your son told me to deliver you a message. Your daughter-in-law had an early birth and she has been sent to the hospital. It was said she had dystocia, so they wanted you to go back quickly."
When Mrs. Hunter heard this, she was anxious and her face changed.
It was already dangerous for a woman to deliver a baby, not to mention she now had dystocia. If anything, they might lose both the mother and the child. How could Mrs. Hunter not panic!
Mrs. Hunter hurriedly turned around and said to Dorothy, "Dorothy, my daughter-in-law has dystocia, so I have to go to the hospital as soon as possible. You stay here and do your job. Please tell Zack about this!"
Before Dorothy responded, Mrs. Hunter returned to her room, took her clothes, and hurried away.
Dorothy sent Mrs. Hunter out and watched her walk away, then she closed the door.
Turning around and looking at this big house, she suddenly became uneasy.
It was dinner time when Zack came back. He drove the car outside the house and honked the car horn.
In the past, as long as he did that, Mrs. Hunter would come to open the door.
But after a while, no one came to open the door. Zack was very confused, wondering what was going on?
He pressed it again and again, "Flute, flute..." The car horn rang for a long time before Dorothy hurried out.
Dorothy finally opened the door. Zack drove the car in and stopped. He got out of the car and glanced at her, asking, "Where is Mrs. Hunter?"
"Mrs. Hunter has left," Dorothy replied.
"Left?" Zack frowned.
"Someone came to her and said that her daughter-in-law had dystocia, so she..."
"Fine!" Zack said impatiently, "Why haven't you opened the door for so long?"
"I was making dishes," Dorothy said.
Dorothy put the ribs in the pot and cooked it. Unexpectedly, the water was not enough and boiled away. She hurriedly took down the pot, planning to add some water and then cook it for a while. At this moment, the doorbell rang.
She added water, put the pot on the fire, and then ran out to open the door.
"Is the meal ready?"
"Yes."
"Serve them then."
Zack took off his coat and handed it to Dorothy, and the latter took it and walked toward the kitchen.
"What are you doing?" Zack shouted.
Dorothy was startled, "I... I'm going to serve you the dishes!"
He furrowed his eyebrows, "You take my clothes to serve them?"
"I..." Dorothy looked at Zack blankly.
Mrs. Hunter didn't tell her what to do with Zack's clothes. This was the dining room and there was no place to hang clothes.
Seeing Dorothy's stupid appearance, Zack was even angrier, "Hang it on the coat rack first!"
"Coat rack?" Dorothy looked around. She was just a girl coming from the countryside. When had she ever seen any coat rack?!
Zack was so angry that he grabbed his clothes, walked out, and hung it on the coat rack in the corner of the living room.
Dorothy finally learned what a coat rack was.
"Why are you still here? Hurry up and get the dishes here!" Zack roared.
"Okay!" Dorothy hurried into the kitchen.
