Chapter 19 Nowhere to Turn To
His heart tightened secretly. Yet he walked forward as if nothing had happened, "Come with me and I will show you how to do that."
Water rinsed the scar on her back when she was washing and left her with huge pain. It took Dorothy a long time to calm herself down from the pain and finished washing.
Zack was sitting in the living room on the second floor without doing anything but staring blankly.
He was imagining what Dorothy would be like when she was washing. In his imagination, the muscles on her back became tense out of pain when the water flowed on her scar.
He could imagine that pain and his heart ached once more. Yet he shook his head and wondered it could not be avoided when he decided to punish her.
This night, Dorothy only slept on her side and did not fall asleep for a long time as her back ached once she tried to lie on the bed.
On the second floor, Zack did not fall asleep either. And he rolled himself from one side to another, with his brain messed up.
Dorothy was afraid of getting up late and she kept looking at the clock on the wall. She got up before the sun rose because Zack told her to prepare breakfast before he got up. Besides, she could not have a good sleep due to the pain on her back.
Dorothy had had the porridge done and was about to make some dishes when Zack came down.
Zack stood at the door of the kitchen and watched the busy woman. He knew her back must be still painful, but he said nothing. Instead, he wondered if Dorothy would get up so early to cook a meal if her back was not aching.
Then she must have slept soundly at this moment.
Dorothy had served all the dishes and porridge to the table when Zack finished washing and arrived in the dining room.
Then he sat down and began to eat.
When Dorothy was about to sit down and eat, she suddenly remembered that she could not eat at the same table with him without permission. It was a rule set yesterday.
Zack ate for a while and saw Dorothy stand there still, then he frowned, "Why don't you eat?"
"Okay." Now Dorothy sat down and began having breakfast.
Dorothy found Zack was staring at her when she was focusing on her plate. Her heart tightened and wondered if she had done something wrong again.
The reason why Zack stared at her was that he suddenly remembered his rule which was set for Dorothy yesterday: that she could not eat with the same table with him without permission. Then he understood why Dorothy stood there just now and did not eat.
He thought that the whip seemed to work. She should still remember that rule when he forgot it.
Dorothy became nervous and stopped eating when she found Zack was watching her silently.
After a while, Zack said, "I am not coming back at noon. You can eat on your own."
"Got it." Dorothy relieved, "Will you come home tonight?"
"Yes!"
"Okay."
Gone was Zack. Dorothy began cleaning as what Zack had told her.
Mrs. Hunter must have cleaned the house often because it was not dirty at all. Being afraid that Zack would find any dirt in the house and punish her when he came back, Dorothy still cleaned every room carefully.
And she began washing all the beddings and Zack's clothes after cleaning the room.
There was a washing machine at home. But Mrs. Hunter left hurriedly that day and did not teach her how to use it. Although she had read about washing machines from books and knew its function, she dared not use it as she never had used it before and was afraid that she might break it.
After all, she could not afford to buy one which worth several hundred yuan if she broke it.
So, washing by her hands was the only choice left for her. Dorothy was okay with washing clothes, but the beddings were too heavy to wash.
When she was tired of the washing, she came out to take a break. She stretched herself but then stopped doing that due to the pain on her back.
When she was at the gate, she became surprised as there was a washing table.
When Mrs. Hunter started working in the house, she said the washing machine could not clean clothes thoroughly and decided that there should be a washing table just like that in Oliver's house. As a result, Zack made one with cement.
Dorothy was pleased to find it and hurried to bring the beddings out and put them on the table. It was more convenient to brush them here.
She brought them back to the laundry room after brushing them all. The beddings became so heavy after being rinsed that she could hardly wring it out. When she tried to use strength, her back began aching. But she could only bear that and tried hard again.
After she wrung them out, she hanged them on the balcony.
Unwilling to meet the annoying woman at home, Zack hung out aimlessly before he drove to Oliver's house. He wanted to drink with him.
When he arrived at Oliver's house, no one came to open the door for him after he rang the bell for a while. He had to call Oliver directly, "Oliver, open the door."
Oliver asked, "What? You come to my house?"
"Yes."
"What for?"
"Don't talk nonsense."
"More specific?"
"Drink."
"I am not at home."
"But today is weekend, where are you if you are not at home?"
"I am on a business trip, and you can come to me when I come back home..."
Zack hung up the call immediately.
Oliver was the only friend of him in this city. If he was not at home, Zack had no place to go to.
And he sat in his car in a bland mind. Besides Oliver, Blake was another person whom he could contact as she was not working today.
He missed her much, not seeing her for a couple of days.
He took out of his phone and found Blake's number. The moment he was about to dial the number, his heart ached for a moment as he thought about the sheet.
His mind was in a daze these days. He missed Blake yet he didn't want to see her.
He gave up calling her finally after putting his finger on the dial key for a long time.
