Chapter 5 I Don't Want a Father like You!
"Mommy..."
Alice begged in a whisper as she pulled Shirley's hand with a puckered face. She wanted to enjoy the meal now, not tomorrow.
How expectant she had been for this meal! She was sad enough to know Kevin couldn't accompany them today.
Shirley knew how cruel it was to dampen a child's spirits.
She had experienced such feelings many times in childhood. Once, her mother promised to take her and her sisters to the amusement park the next day, but when she woke up, she found they had gone without her.
They said it was she who got up late, but that was not true. It was they who set off earlier without telling her.
"This is how you solve the problem?" Receiving no apology, Shirley suddenly lost interest in this restaurant.
The manager shrugged her shoulders. "This is the only solution. I can only arrange a table for you tomorrow. If you agree, you can tell me your phone number."
"Don't go too far!" Shirley shouted. She was really furious about the manager's arrogance.
The manager rolled her eyes, showing no care about Shirley's anger.
"Boo-hoo..." Seeing her mother being bullied, Alice rubbed her eyes and cried out with sadness.
Inside the restaurant.
Johnson heard the noise from outside and asked, "What's going on?"
"I'll ask."
Flynn, who had been standing next to him, walked fast toward the door.
Johnson looked at his son sitting opposite him and tried to sound patient. "How long do you need to eat a bowl of noddles?"
It had been one hour!
Tom was also not a good-tempered boy. He slapped his chopsticks onto the table and lifted his head. "The steward taught me to eat slowly. I'm just doing as he requires."
Sitting face to face, the man and the boy were so much alike.
Tom had perfectly inherited Johnson's appearance and also bad temper.
"Did the steward teach you to slap the chopsticks?" A trace of displeasure climbed onto Johnson's face.
He knew his son well. Tom was venting his anger for being disciplined by the steward. What a smart boy at his four!
Johnson didn't like crowded or noisy places which included this restaurant, but Tom said he wanted to come here several days ago. Since the boy seldom asked for anything, Johnson booked the whole restaurant and took him here today.
"No." Being a big boy, Tom was not afraid of his cold-faced father at all. He admitted, "I learned it by myself."
Johnson narrowed his eyes. "You..."
"Mr. Roberts."
Flynn went back and interrupted the furious man in time. Respectfully, he said, "The restaurant forgot to cancel today's reservations. A woman has taken her daughter here, but they can't come in. The girl is crying."
With a look at Johnson, he felt an urge to say the little girl was very lovely and looked a little like Tom.
But he thought he'd better cut his crap when Johnson was in a bad mood.
"Let them in." Johnson dropped the napkin he had used to wipe his hands.
This ordinary movement was presented with tremendous grace by this man.
"But..." Flynn hesitated. How could he let others in when Tom didn't finish his meal?
"The lunch is over," Johnson announced. He rose with his last patience worn by his son.
Hearing that, Tom trembled with anger, jumped off the chair, and pointed at his father's back. Loudly, he cursed, "You bad man! You can just take work as your son! I don't want a father like you!"
His childish voice was filled with fury, dissatisfaction, and also great hidden disappointment.
Goaded beyond endurance, Johnson turned around and saw the boy pointing at him. Feeling challenged, he frowned with burning rage and strode to Tom.
The restaurant was suddenly enveloped by an upcoming storm.
Outside the restaurant.
Shirley was still arguing with the manager. She was not an aggressive woman, but the manager's attitude was too irritating!
Rude, haughty, and disrespectful to customers!
With the reservation information as evidence, she was determined to struggle for her right. This woman should at least apologize to her!
"Ah!"
Just then, a scream came from inside the restaurant.
Shirley looked inside with shock. The boy must have been beaten very heavily!
Majoring in child care, Shirley didn't advocate violent education. At this moment, she felt very worried about the boy. But it was strange – why did she care about a boy that she didn't know?
It was like she was the one beaten!
She took Alice's hand and stood on tiptoe, trying to see what happened inside.
But the frosted glass still blurred her sight.
The others looked at each other in silence. No one dared to gossip behind the most influential man in this city.
"Let's end our relationship here! Get out!"
Tom's face was covered with tears. His stubbornness was also 100% inherited from his father. Even though he felt hurt after being beaten, he insisted on voicing his thoughts.
Johnson also got tired and gave up beating his son. Without a word, he carried Tom on his shoulder and strode out with a straight face.
"Let go of me! Let go of me!" Tom yelled while kicking the air. He didn't like being carried in a way that hurt his dignity!
But Johnson ignored his resistance directly.
When he came to the door, he suddenly paused his step.
Because he recognized the woman who had saved Tom that night.
Beside her, a little girl had tears over her face and watery big eyes that aroused his sympathy. At this moment, she was sobbing in a low voice.
Johnson felt an impulse to buy her all toys in the world to make her smile.
At the same time, Shirley's attention was focused on the little boy.
But since he was facing another side, she couldn't see his face. His long-sleeved shirt and long pants also covered his possible wounds, which made her very anxious.
How she wanted to tell his parent the danger of violent education!
"Mrs. Smith, what a coincidence!" Flynn broke the silence.
Now that Mr. Roberts stopped here, he might have recognized this woman. But Mrs. Smith had her attention on Tom and didn't notice Mr. Roberts...
"!!"
The restaurant manager shivered with fear. Why did Flynn, Mr. Roberts's assistant, know this woman?
She felt that her brilliant career was going to end here!
Hearing Flynn's voice, Shirley turned around.
Oh, it was the man she had seen in Smith's. She remembered he was Johnson Roberts's assistant... Huh? Johnson Roberts?!
Only then did she look up at Johnson's awfully handsome but expressionless face...
She was astonished. This world was too small!
But things were easier to handle in front of an acquaintance. She said, "Mr. Roberts, how could you beat the child? He's so lovely. If you can spend two minutes reasoning with him, he will listen!"
Flynn was rendered speechless...
Was this woman criticizing Mr. Roberts for his education?
He wanted to defend his boss, saying that Mr. Roberts took his son to have a big meal though he was very busy, in which aspect he was a responsible father. But before he could say that, Johnson replied in person...
