Chapter 7 Hunger Strike

Linda took a firm line this time, so Shirley could only agree.

The next morning, Shirley took Alice to Linda's store before hurrying to the interview. She was not going to apply for the job but to refuse it.

It was not polite enough to say that on the phone. Now that the family was into her, she decided to go there in person.

The buildings in that area were all more spacious and luxurious than the Smiths. According to the address, Shirley came to a large steel gate. After telling why she came here, she was led through a big garden into the villa in the middle.

"Mrs. Smith, I'll take you to the second floor," the servant said.

When Shirley followed the servant into the hall, she was surprised at the sight of a wall. Golly, why were they again?

Johnson's and Tom's faces were shown in a dozen photos!

They were so much alike, though Tom looked childish. When this little guy grew up, he would definitely be as dashing as his father.

Although Shirley was just back from abroad, she had also heard about the Roberts.

It was said they came to this city several years ago mysteriously. Before they were noticed, they had taken all their powers of diplomacy to establish an empire overnight. When others realized that, the empire had been indestructible and invincible.

Oh? In a photo, Tom looked so much like Alice in babyhood. Both of them were plump and cute with the same curves of smiles.

Eyes locked on that photo, Shirley felt a little sad in her heart as if pricked by a needle.

Something was very strange. When she was pregnant, she thought she was expecting twins. But after all examinations, she was told that she had only one baby.

Some people even said she had a delusion as a result of over-expectation for twins and even suggested her seeing a psychiatrist.

But how could that be? She knew her health condition very well...

But no one in this world trusted her, and even the examinations proved that she was delusional. In those days, she was really on the verge of a mental breakdown.

She was like a lunatic trying to prove her belief to the world, but her efforts were met with only sneers.

Fortunately, after Alice was born, the lovely baby and the full life healed her heart. Gradually, she didn't mention twins again.

"Master Tom, please come out!"

"You haven't eaten or drunk for four days. How could you bear it?"

"Master Tom, it's time to change the insulin pump!"

"Master Tom, if you don't come out, Mr. Roberts will blame us again!"

Before reaching the second floor, Shirley heard a group of people begging aloud.

The servant next to her explained, "Master Tom is very naughty. He usually locks himself in his bedroom. So Mr. Roberts wants to hire someone to accompany Master Tom and to understand what's in his head. Since Master Tom is not that well, the caregiver is required to know medicine. You're picked by Mr. Roberts in person."

Otherwise, Shirley, a nobody, might have been weeded out among a group of candidates graduating from elite universities with excellent nursing experience.

Oh.

No wonder she was chosen. It was Johnson who picked her in person.

Why did she feel like a product being "picked" by this big shot?

When she went to the second floor, a door near her suddenly opened.

Shirley saw Johnson standing inside with an electric saw, his angry eyes fixed on Tom's bedroom door.

Jesus, this man was going to fly into a rage!

As the man took a step closer to the door, the servants' hearts jolted. It was as if the man walking to them with the saw was the Lord of Death!

Perhaps, he was really the incarnation of the Lord of Death!

"Master Tom, hurry up! Come out here!"

A servant didn't have the heart to see Tom being punished, thumping the door at this last moment.

But the door remained unmoved.

"Get out of my way!" Johnson was ready to press the button of the saw. The little guy was becoming increasingly rebellious as he grew up!

Last time after Tom was on a hunger strike for a day, Johnson agreed to take him to have a big children's meal in a moment of weakness. Now, this little devil repeated the trick and asked for more.

Shirley couldn't stand it anymore. She rushed up to Johnson and spread her arms to stop him from moving forward. "Enough!"

"!!!"

The servants were stunned!

Although they were also worried about Tom, they didn't dare to risk their lives to stop Johnson!

"It's you?" Johnson stared at Shirley. Why did she appear in his life again and again?

The servant who had taken Shirley here stepped forward and reminded him respectfully, "Sir, she's here for an interview for the caregiver. You picked her in person."

Johnson lowered the saw. He really forgot such a thing.

Shirley swallowed. "I told you. You should be patient with a child. It's wrong to use violence. Do you want him to do the same to you when you're old?"

"How dare he?" He said in a deep voice.

"If you go on like this, you'll know whether he dares or not after dozens of years." She looked up at him. Although she was a little scared, she wouldn't give in to him.

How could he punish a child with a saw? He could at most use a hanger to frighten the boy.

"How dare you threaten me by hunger strike? Well done! Then stay there forever!" He looked up over Shirley, who was a head shorter than him, and landed his stare at the closed door.

Then, he dropped the saw onto the ground with a bang and left in a huff.

Terribly scared, the servants collapsed onto the ground limply with sweat all over.

"Miss. Smith, you're so bold."

The servants who had led her in wiped the sweat on her forehead.

"Yes, you're the first person who dares to contradict Mr. Roberts."

"Thank you for saving Master Tom!"

"But Master Tom can't escape the punishment like this forever. Both Mr. Roberts and he have a fiery temper. Alas!"

Hearing the servants' conversation, Shirley was lost in thought. After a while, she asked, "Did this begin four days ago after Master Tom went back home?"

It was exactly the day they had a children's meal in that restaurant.

She believed that Tom was not a narrow-minded boy who would lock himself up for being beaten. There must be something else that had irritated him very much that day.

"Yes, do you know anything?"

Shirley pressed her lips together. Then, she thought of a photo she had seen when going upstairs...

She said, "Could I stay alone with Master Tom for a while?"

The servants then left her alone.
