Chapter 9 Like the Way She Is
Seeing his daughter's tearful expression was breaking Hubert's heart.
"Good girl, don't cry. I'm fine, so no worries. A good man is not afraid of his shadow, and I believe that the law will clear my name."
Liz managed to hold back her tears and squeezed out a smile upon her mouth.
Her father did not realize that though the law was fair, human hearts were vicious.
In the previous life, Hubery did not end up dying from the law but a murder.
"Dad, don't worry. Greg has promised to save you. You'll soon get out."
Hubert asked with a frown, "Liz, I thought you never liked Greg. Why is he willing to help me?"
"I'm married to him."
"What? To save me?"
Hubert was stunned, then angry and anxious.
Liz's mother died young, and it was Hubery who raised Liz alone. His care for his daughter was meticulous.
Although Greg was an excellent choice and Hubert was delighted to see his daughter married him, he was clear that it was Chris that his daughter loved deep inside.
Witnessing Hubert hammer the table in exasperation, the guards immediately walked over to remind him with their eyes.
Liz hurriedly explained, "Don't worry, Dad. I didn't marry him to save you. Well, to be frank, that's part of the reason. But I'll marry him no matter how."
Hubert stared at his daughter with a distressed expression on his face.
"Liz, you shouldn't go against your heart. Dad wants you to be happy and to marry the man you really love.
I am innocent and was framed by someone. Sooner or later, I will be released from here. Thus, you really didn't have to marry Greg. You're making me feel sorry for your mother; you know that?"
Liz shook her head, saying, "Dad, it's not like that. I really like Greg."
"Really?" Hubert looked at her in surprise.
Since when did Liz change her mind?
Did not she once claim that casting an extra glance at Greg was enough to annoy her?
Liz guessed what Hubert was thinking about from his expression but could do nothing but scratching her head helplessly.
She thought inwardly, "Look at you, Liz.
What a stupid woman you used to be!
The entire world knows that you hate Greg to the extreme."
Liz recalled that Greg always refused to take his exclusive vehicle home when they were in high school but walked with her.
One time, the other classmates on the road made fun of them.
A classmate said, "Liz, I heard you and Greg are dating each other."
Liz flew into a rage, retorting, "Says who? How dare you say that in front of me? Believe it or not, I'll beat the crap out of you if you say that again."
The classmate said, "Are you shy?"
Liz said nothing else but rushed over to hit the speaker.
The classmate hurried to say, "Stop it, Liz. Please don't hit me. Greg will stop liking you if you behave violently."
Just then, Greg responded to that classmate with a calm expression on his face, "Says who?"
Liz's fist paused in the air.
Greg continued indifferently, "I like the way she is."
The classmate fell speechless.
After that, the gossip about the two of them enhanced.
Liz hated the gossip. The worst part was that Chris asked her specifically about it on one occasion.
"Liz, is it true that you and Greg are in a relationship? We're high school students. I think all of us should be focusing on our studies," Chris said.
Liz was so angry that she cried, yelled, and scratched at Greg after school. She even poured the drink that Greg bought her over his head.
When Liz ran away that day, the look in Greg's eyes was lonely and disappointed.
Damn it!
Liz hammered herself in the chest.
What an asshole she used to be to hurt the man who loved her so much. No wonder she eventually got punished by her destiny.
