Chapter 8 Schemes of Rich Families
A total of ten dishes were served on the large rectangular dining table. Howard and Summer sat down one after another across from Amanda.
With a relaxed and natural look, Howard tenderly and thoughtfully helped Summer pick up the dishes.
She tried her best to relax and feign shyness.
Deep down, she admired the scheming boss she just got acquainted with for his great performance. Did he major in acting?
It was really a long day for her. She recalled what happened today and felt like a dream.
At the sight of the fragrant dishes on the table, Summer tried hard to suppress the desire to gobble them up and have her meal with her head low like a fair lady.
"Miss Pratt, how long have you been dating Howard?" Amanda suddenly put down her chopsticks, looked at Summer, and asked with a smile.
She hurriedly swallowed the dish, got choked, and coughed behind her hand.
What to do, what to do?
Q&A time, but… without script, how could she continue with her play?
Summer had to disguise her nervousness with a smile and responded in a low voice, "Madam, just call me Summer. Miss Pratt sounds distant."
"Excuse me for my senile mind, Summer." Amanda laughed out.
"No way, you look like… Howard's sister."
Amanda understood that Summer deliberately evaded her question and thus became more suspicious of the relationship between Howard and Summer.
But Summer was already alert, so it would be too obvious to press the matter.
So, she steered the conversation to chitchat, "Summer, are you working with Howard now?"
Summer was relieved that Amanda didn't wrestle with that question, her voice crispier, "Not really, I'm still in school. It's my junior year at Middlebury College."
"No wonder you look so young."
"Not too young, I'm 21 this year." Summer stuck out her tongue mischievously.
"21? How long have you been dating? I didn't hear Howard talking about you before." Amanda was full of doubts.
What was yet to come would.
Summer's relaxed nerves became taut again. She hesitated in answering the question.
Just then, Howard, who had been dining and pretending not to hear their conversation, kicked her twice gently under the table.
Summer was confused. Twice, what did that mean? Two years?
Impossible, there was no way that the permanently icy and scheming man would date anyone for two years.
Two days sounded too radical.
That made two months the best answer. Yes, it must be two months.
"Two months." She sheepishly raised two fingers with a smile.
Following that, she just wanted to bury herself underground because she heard 'two years' from an unhesitating Howard.
"Two years and two months, to be exact." Summer blushed and hurriedly tried to smooth things over.
"Oh, that's long enough to discuss marriage. When are you going to claim the marriage license?" Amanda laughed exaggeratedly.
"C… claiming the marriage license?" Summer looked blankly at Howard who was still dining with his head low. Wasn't this playing with fire?
"Yes, according to the will of Howard's father, 42% shares of Transcendent Group is temporarily held by me. I'll have them transferred to Howard upon his marriage. The lawyer also needs to see the license to go through the procedures. Howard has been in charge of Transcendent Group for almost three years. It's unreasonable that he doesn't hold shares. So, I'm urging him to get married." Explained Amanda.
Summer hummed with an awkward smile and then stopped talking.
Back then, Howard agreed to marry the lady from the Flynn family. Presumably, he wanted to get the shares of Transcendent Group through the wedding.
But why did he suddenly cancel the marriage?
Because he just learned that the transfer of the shares required a marriage license today?
The schemes of rich families were so complicated!
