Chapter 15 Two Phone Calls
After a short while, Alex said, "Hehe, it seems that only money could change your mind."
At his words, Nora's expression changed dramatically.
Somehow, she felt tight in her throat and was lost for words to express her rage.
She did not expect the man to downgrade her resentment to the lack of money.
"Alex, don't go too far!"
She pushed the man away, not wanting to argue with him on this issue anymore.
In any event, she would not resign.
However, as Nora took one step forward, Alex moved closer to her to wrap her with the frosty vibe he gave off. With a threatening look in his long eyes, he said, "Sign it."
Again, his tone was irresistible.
Nora struggled, resolutely refusing the man's request.
However, the man grasped her so tightly that she could not break free from his control.
The woman's anger eventually became helplessness.
The man moved the contract to her front and shoved the pen into her hand, saying, "Just sign it, and then I'll let go of you. You know I am not a patient man."
"I won't sign it! I don't want to quit my job!"
Despite Nora's hysterical resistance, Alex grabbed her hand to force her to sign her name on the file.
When the woman's first name was finished, a sharp phone ringing broke the oppressive confrontation.
Feeling like a survivor after a horrible disaster, Nora threw away the pen and tore the document into pieces like crazy, then hurried to flee the scene.
Glaring at the woman, Alex had to pick up his cell phone and answered it in a frosty voice, "Hello?"
At what the person on the other end of the line said to him, Alex's expression softened all over with a trace of worry crossing his deep eye sockets.
"How come she feels uncomfortable all of a sudden?"
Even though Nora did not want to pay attention to the look in Alex's eyes, she could not stop her ears from listening and her mind from thinking.
Somehow, Nora felt empty inside, and all her previous fury turned into snowflakes.
She knew who the person on the other end of the line was.
Only one woman could worry Alex like this.
After a while, the phone call ended before the man said, "All right. Don't worry, I'll come over right away."
Alex hung up, cast a careless glance at the shredded paper on the floor, then said to Nora with a complicated expression on his face, "Happy now?"
Nora bit her bottom lip and said nothing.
The man began to tidy his clothes and re-button his shirt with traces of coldness in his long eyes.
Nora stood aside in silence.
Soon, Alex exited the room and slammed the door shut. He did not come back this night.
...
The next day, after getting out of bed, Nora intended to go to work.
It seemed that what had happened last night did not affect her in the slightest.
However, during breakfast, an unexpected phone call suspended Nora's heart to her throat.
"Doctor Lloyd?"
It was from her mother's attending doctor. Involuntarily, Nora's mind ran wild.
On the other end of the line, Doctor Lloyd nimbly sensed Nora's fear from her tone of voice and hurried to comfort her by saying, "Nora, don't get nervous. I'm calling to tell you that your mother has woken up. Still, her condition is weak, and I think you should come to the hospital to see her."
Upon hearing the good news, Nora ultimately left behind what had happened last night.
She beamed with joy, answering, "Great. I'll be right over."
