Contemporary Romance>Honey, Where Are You Going?>Chapter 11 Distress
Chapter 11 Distress
A day and a night later, Kane was finally out of danger and transferred to a VIP ward.
Worried that Kane would ask about Joanna when he woke up, Lukas endured his disgust and went to see Joanna.
When he arrived at Ward 302, the medical staff told him that Joanna was already discharged from the hospital.
"When did she leave?" Lukas pulled a long face.
"Yesterday afternoon." Replied the nurse.
The river in early spring was freezing. After just hours of hospitalization, she dared to leave?
His grandpa had a heart attack because of her, and she wanted to kick up another rumpus over the incident. It made him detest her even more.
While walking towards the elevator, Lukas took out his cell phone and called Joanna.
"Sorry, the subscriber you dialed cannot be connected for the moment!"
"Joanna!"
Lukas resented Joanna even more. Grasping the phone, he went out of the hospital in a huff.
He called the old house, but no one answered either.
Fuming with rage, Lukas drove to the wedding house prepared by his grandfather a long time ago.
He opened the door and saw the bleak room.
Lukas still got in and called out.
"Joanna, come out!"
The house was empty, and there was no sign of Joanna.
In his anger, he punched the wall but acted like he didn't feel the dull pain from his fist.
Did she go back to Bennett's house?
After a moment of hesitation, Lukas held back his irritation and dialed the number of Joanna's father.
"Lukas, I'm about to call you. Today, I'm on a business trip and just heard that Joanna jumped into the river. She is so ignorant to play such petty tricks to attract your attention."
"Mila went to the hospital, taught her a lesson, and snapped her yesterday. If that's not enough to vent your anger, I'll go back tomorrow and beat her up!"
"Don't worry, if she dares to scare you like this again, Mila and I will make her jump off the Golden Bridge lest you lose face!"
Lukas got mixed feelings.
As an adult with normal value, he found Sam's speech strange.
However far Joanna went, Sam was still her biological father.
What kind of father would criticize his daughter harshly instead of caring about her condition after learning that she jumped into the river?
"The place where Joanna jumped off was the Golden Bridge." Lukas tore at the collar and said in a cold voice.
There was a long silence on the other end of the phone. When Sam spoke again, it was somehow an apology.
"I'm sorry, Lukas. I know that Joanna has embarrassed you. Mila is correct. She should go to hell! I really didn't expect that she could survive the jump from Golden Bridge. I'm going back now to..."
"That won't be necessary!" Lukas pinched his third eye area. Never had he expected that Sam and Mila should hold such ideas about the incident.
He couldn't help but reflex on the only two meetings with the couple after the engagement. Their ardent and flattering faces were his only impression of them.
He was sick of Joanna, to begin with, and the flattery from her parents worsened his impression of her.
"You don't have to come back. Joanna and I will settle our own problems!"
Disgusted with Sam's voice, Lukas hung up the phone.
Standing in the master bedroom, he raised his head and happened to see a photo at the head of the bed. His grandpa took them to take the photo.
The house was prepared by Kane as their bridal chamber. Because he disliked Joanna, he had never been here before.
Joanna, however, would come and stay here.
In the photo, Joanna beamed, slightly raised her head, and looked at him ardently.
He, however, just looked ahead like a statue. His face was stern and his eyes cold.
The remarks of Sam and Mila suddenly echoed in his mind. He could imagine how hard her life was in Bennett's house all these years.
He could not help but think how devastated Joanna was when she stood on the Golden Bridge...
An unprecedented feeling rose in him. It was like guilt and distress.
Lukas stroked his face and thought about the places Joanna could go, only to find that he knew nothing about her.
In the end, he had to call his secretary, Pierce Cooper.
"Pierce, help me find out if Joanna has any friends she trusts."
After hanging up the phone, Lukas somehow didn't dare to look at the beaming girl in the photo again. Turning around, he strode out of the place.
