Chapter 17 Terrifying
In the bookstore, Chris sat on the sofa in the lounge quietly with his eyes closed. His air was cold, distant, and deterring those young fellows waiting in line.
They even admired Joanna for her composure in front of such a bigshot.
"I should go."
"I'll come tomorrow."
"I'm not in a hurry either and will come another day."
...
Joanna came back quickly to the lounge, saw the man seemingly asleep with his eyes slightly closed, and swallowed back the words that were at the tip of her tongue.
Chris seemingly sensed her presence and opened his eyes when a flicker of a smile flashed by.
"So soon?"
"Yeah." Though she was fast, he was asleep, "If you're tired, you can take a rest in our lounge."
Chris curled up his lips and hummed nonchalantly.
Joanna put the books down on the tea table in front of him and turned to make a cup of tea for him. When she saw the man started reading, she quietly walked away.
In the distance, Edith Snyder beckoned to her, and Joanna had to walk over.
"That man is so hot!"
"Mm, he's hotter when he reads books." Joanna concurred.
Edith looked over. The man was tall, noble, and elegant.
"He's the best of the best!"
Joanna just smiled and went to greet a girl who just came in to buy books.
Edith swallowed and seized an opportunity to trot to the lounge.
"Sir, anything I can help you?"
Chris raised his eyes. Behind the gold-rimmed glasses, his eyes instantly turned cold and emitted intense deterrence.
Edith felt a shiver down her spine which then rushed to her brain.
She apologized for the interruption and fled.
Joanna just came back from looking for a book. While asking the girl if she wanted it, she lowered her voice to ask Edith.
"What happened to you? You look pale, is it your period?"
Still suffering from an aftershock, Edith didn't even dare to glance at the lounge.
"No... it's just... Jo, you were not scared? Impressive."
Joanna was baffled. The girl confirmed the book and went to the checkout.
"Scared of what?"
Edith tactfully pointed to the lounge, only to find the man who just sat there left.
"That man, his eyes looked terrifying!"
"How could it be?" He was her rescuer and looked lazy, noble, and elegant. Joanna couldn't help justifying him, "He is polite and kindhearted."
Edith was speechless...
Was there anything with Joanna's eyes?
At 5:30, Joanna went off work.
Edith packed up and caught up with her.
"Joanna, let's go together."
Joanna found it strange. Edith was talkative but snobbish and always deemed herself superior.
"I have some business."
She hadn't bought a new cell phone and found it inappropriate to keep using her rescuer's phone.
"I'll go with you." Edith smiled.
They went to a nearby store, bought a cell phone, and went home by subway.
Along the way, Edith kept talking to her, much more enthusiastic than before.
When she got off at her stop, she looked at Edith who was on the train, and took a tumble.
Edith thought that she had the contact information of that man.
For a moment, Joanna seemed to see herself in the girl. She used to chase after Lukas like this. Back then, she was silly, stubborn, simple, and ignorant.
The scene of the man reading books seriously and elegantly with his eyes low flashed across her mind. Joanna laughed, bought some vegetables and fruits from a supermarket, and went back to Saya's place to prepare dinner.
