Chapter 17 The Doubt
The recording stopped abruptly.
The crowd quieted down.
Although it was hard to distinguish whom two of the three voices in the recording belonged, Emily's was clearly recognizable.
Ella walked up to Alyssa, saying, "I can also prove that Alyssa didn't cheat at all."
"Ella, I know you and Alyssa are good friends, but you can't perjure. How could you prove that Alyssa didn't cheat?"
Emily glared at Ella with hatred inside. How could this annoying woman show up at this moment and speak up for Alyssa?
Emily believed that Alyssa must have cheated. If not, how could she have gotten those brilliant grades?
They had been schoolmates for such a long time, and Alyssa was always an academic loser relying on her wealthy and influential family.
How could it be possible for her to improve her academic performance this considerately in just half a month?
Seeing the defiant look in Emily's eyes, Alyssa flashed a smile, saying, "If you're unconvinced, let's have another test, just you and me. How about that?"
At Alyssa's words, Emily laughed. "Miss Graham, do not act on impulse. It will be very humiliating if you lose. No matter how you managed to cheat last time, you won't make it for the second time. You'd better think twice."
"I said what I said. Let's go to the teachers right now."
An hour later...
Alyssa and Emily were seated on the east and west sides of the classroom, respectively.
There were three invigilators in the room watching them.
Alyssa and Emily started to answer the questions immediately after they were given the test papers.
The exams covering five subjects lasted for an entire day.
To be fair and impartial, their papers were graded on the spot.
The results were announced in less than twenty minutes.
The total score for Emily was 457, while that for Alyssa was 458.
Emily looked at the announcer in disbelief. "No way! How could I lose to Alyssa? My academic performance has always been way better than hers. Sir, are you sure the results are correct?"
"One hundred percent certain. Also, I didn't mark the papers alone. Including me, there were ten of us. The results are correct and final. Emily, you said Alyssa cheated on the previous exams. However, she outperforms you again. It seems that you did misunderstand her."
"Impossible! Her academic performance used to be so lousy." Emily could not accept the fact, wondering if Alyssa faked her condition before.
Alyssa flashed a smile at the woman, who was deep in confusion. "Now the results are clear. Don't you think you should apologize to me? I won't bother with you about what happened before, but now you must apologize to me in front of the whole school."
"I'm not wrong! I don't believe you can surpass me. You must have used some underhanded methods! That must be it!"
"Whether I cheated or not is as plain as the nose on your face. Emily, if you still refuse to accept the fact, we can take another round of exams as I have nothing to be afraid of. I repeat, I did not cheat."
"Okay, let's take another round tomorrow. And I request the whole school to invigilate this time so that you'll have no chance to cheat at all."
"I agree!"
At Alyssa's words, a lot of people on the scene looked at her.
"She definitely did not cheat. I mean, three teachers invigilated them in the room. And the invigilators should not have lied about the results."
"Exactly. These exams were temporary, and those papers were randomly chosen. Alyssa needed to know the test questions if she indeed played tricks, and that's impossible."
"Yeah, I think Alyssa has real stuff in her mind."
"Then how shall we explain the past? Alyssa's academic performance has never been this good before. Perhaps she has been really fortunate to come across those questions she is familiar with."
The school had to prepare for a third round of exams under pressure coming from students.
