Chapter 16 Self-Abandonment

Claude asked curiously, "That woman is pretty, elegant, and professional. Her attitude to you is modest yet not humble. Also, I don't think she adores you. I mean, is she just your secretary?"

Claude would like to have a secretary like Emma.

"Claude, open your eyes. Do you really think Wilson has invited James, a nobody, over because he wants to cooperate with M Company?"

Claude understood the situation at Noah's words, saying, "M Company is no match for even a branch of the Evans Group. How can it be qualified to participate in such a huge project?"

With that, Claude added, "Wilson, does your secretary know James before?"

Wilson glanced at the two men, then drank alone without saying anything.

Not only did they know each other before, but they were also formers lovers!

"I'm going to the bathroom." Wilson suddenly wanted to see how the woman would react when she was alone with James.

Noah and Claude exchanged a glance and saw the hint of surprise in each other's eyes.

Emma did not enter the bathroom. Instead, she stood in the smoking area outside. Upon hearing footsteps coming from her behind, she jerked back to see James walking towards her with an exasperated expression on his face.

"Hehe, why do you look annoyed? Have the others in the room irritated you?"

"Emma, you embarrassed me on purpose, didn't you?" James asked angrily, gritting his teeth.

Emma asked back with a confused look in her eyes. "I barely talked back in there. How could I have embarrassed you?"

"Why didn't you nod when President Hayes asked for your opinion? I know you're still mad at me for being with Mary, but she and I are genuinely in love. If you hadn't abandoned yourself to a one-night stand with some wild man, I would not have broken up with you. You cuckolded me. And now you want to ruin my business?"

"Speaking of that, James, remind me who asked me out to dinner that night? And who did not show up but sent over a bottle of wine? And who suddenly appeared with Mary and a group of reporters?" Emma asked aggressively.

James's facial expression became somewhat unnatural. "Are you blaming me for your own mistake?"

"I'm not blaming you. You know what? I'm thinking about the rainy night when I tore up your love letters and photos. I know very well how ruthless a man's heart can be when he lost his interest in me. James, there is nothing left between us. Don't assume that I will help you."

Somehow, Emma wanted to thank Wilson. No matter why he had arranged the event this way, it at least helped her see James in a wretched state.

Staring at Emma's exquisite makeup and pretty features, James faintly felt remorseful.

He had to admit that Emma was prettier, more elegant, and capable than Mary, but he...

Mary was Benson's favorite, while Emma was nothing but an ornament in the Brooks Family. Besides, Emma was a traditional woman. Although they dated each other for more than a year, Emma only allowed James to hold her hand but rejected him to kiss her.

As energetic as James was, Emma's aloof attitude made him think that they were not right for each other.

"How on earth did you seduce President Hayes? Why did he leave such a significant matter to you?" James stared at Emma's gorgeous face with a gloomy expression and asked in an irritated voice.

With her brows raised, Emma said, "I'm afraid that's none of your business. Later, I will tell President Hayes that M Company is nothing but an empty shell. It will hinder the proceeding of A project. Presumably, both President Lane and President Evans will strongly oppose your participation."

At the words, James flew into a rage. "Emma, what benefits are you gaining by making things difficult for me like this?"
