Chapter 18 Half Life Garden
Unsure of the process, Theo saw Victor's poker face but dared not ask about it, "Mr. Reid, are we going to the western suburbs as usual?"
Ever since his retirement, Victor would go back to Half Life Garden on his birthday every year. He would stay for one night at the place where his mother and he used to live.
"Mm."
After leaving Blue Hill Clinic, Theo quickly drove the car uptown.
Half Life Garden was the private property of Victor's mother. It was named after the mountain garden in front of the residence. The entire property included nine hills and a huge valley.
His mother loved flowers. Before her marriage, her father bought the place and planted thousands of different flowers as her dowry.
In the end, she died there and would not like to come back.
As they moved closer to the garden, old memories swarmed back, and Victor rarely showed nostalgia.
"Victor, when you grow up, you'll meet someone who spares no effort to approach you. If she hugs, kisses, and even messes with you, you should keep her by your side. You'll try your best to be her beacon, control her emotions, and claim every part of her..."
When they first met, Judith hugged him.
When they met the second time, Judith somehow stole his first kiss.
When they met the third time, Judith fawned upon him.
She went further and further...
"Those were just accidents."
Victor pursed his lips and squeezed his third eye area, "She's still a kid..."
He showed concern just because she was too noisy.
All of a sudden, a noise came from the trunk.
Victor came back to his senses and glanced over out of the corner of his eye. His temples popped involuntarily.
Presumably, that girl would not cause trouble again...
As soon as Theo stopped the car, a well-dressed middle-aged couple was seen standing in the near distance. They were none other than Bruce Pate, the current president of Pate Group and his wife, Emelia Carlson.
Emelia was pregnant with two children at an early age and only 40 this year. Once dressed up, she was still a gorgeous lady.
Bruce Pate, however, grew fatter over the years. When Emelia and he stood together, they looked like father and daughter.
Theo's facial expressions turned subtle as soon as he recognized the couple.
What were they doing here?
Theo braced himself and reminded Victor, "Sir, two seniors of the Pate family are here..."
"Tell them to leave."
Victor's eyes and voice were indifferent. Unable to tell if he was angry or happy, Theo hurriedly got off and checked Emelia from knocking on the window.
"Mr. and Mrs. Pate, you can't disturb Mr. Reid today, please leave."
Emelia glanced at the cabin and spoke impatiently, "We need to talk with Mr. Reid, do not stand in the way."
"Madam, it really won't work today."
Emelia pushed him away grumpily, and Bruce dragged him down, "Theo, there is really something important, otherwise, we wouldn't have come to the wilderness."
"Mr. Pate, you don't understand. It's a special case today. Mr. Reid, he..."
Theo explained anxiously, but Bruce cut him short disapprovingly, "His birthday, right? We're here to give him a birthday present. Mr. Reid will like it."
Theo paled to hear that, "Mr. Pate, you really can't today!"
It had been 20 years since Victor's mother burned herself. The Reid family mentioned nothing of it, and everyone almost forgot about it. Even so, no one dared to disturb him today!
Bruce grabbed him forcefully and whispered, "Theo, are you making things difficult for us because you find our benefits not good enough?"
Theo changed his countenance and lowered his voice, "When did I take your benefits?"
Bruce gave a spurious smile, "Every time you saw my daughter, you couldn't tear your eyes away and even secretly hugged her. You took advantage of her. Isn't that benefit?"
"I didn't!"
As his secret was laid bare, he raised his voice sanctimoniously.
