Chapter 12 A Set up
In the process of moving forward, Gabrielle felt Rachel's cries getting weaker and weaker. She slowed down cautiously.
She was wondering if the direction was right or not when the cry died abruptly.
Then there was a faint sound of locking behind her.
In a second, she realized that she was tricked and ran towards the door. But it had been locked before she could get out.
"Trap!"
She pounded her fists on the door in frustration, but it did not budge, as if it was mocking her.
Joyce!
How unscrupulous she was to take Rachel, her own daughter, as a decoy! No wonder why Rachel did not like her at all!
Leaning against the door, Gabrielle clenched her fists and took a deep breath.
She was acutely aware that the reason why she was stuck in Joyce's trap was not all about Joyce but also associated with her kindness. Joyce deceived her by her concern for Rachel.
It was an impressive lesson.
She must not be so careless in the future.
Although she was locked up, thankfully, Rachel was not in trouble.
Gabrielle frowned as she looked at the deep walkway.
In the two years of her life in the villa before, she had never set foot in the basement because it was Ben's private territory, one of his three forbidden places.
If anyone broke in without his permission, he would suffer his harsh punishment.
She was too anxious to remember that. Joyce was planning to make her be punished or fired by Ben.
What a crafty woman!
Gabrielle, who looked gloomy, headed forward for another exit. But to her dismay, she lost her bearings in the dark instead of finding a way out.
Her sons were right that she was likely to get lost...
"Who's out there?"
A cold voice suddenly sounded in the silent basement.
"Who?" Gabrielle was startled.
It was a man's voice and sounded a bit familiar.
Gabrielle composed herself and walked slowly in the direction of the voice.
Soon, she found an invisible door at the end of the hallway.
"Who's out there!" The man's voice turned colder than before.
Gabrielle felt a chill of fear down her spine.
There was the eerie voice of a mysterious man in the dim basement...
Was she in a horror movie?
Since there was no way out behind her, Gabrielle had to suppress her fear which provoked her to flee. She pressed the switch by the door and quickly covered her eyes with her hands.
Although she knew that covering her eyes was not useful, she could not help but do so when watching horror movies to be less scared.
The invisible door opened from the middle and retracted into the walls on either side.
Gabrielle finally saw the inside of the door through her fingers.
It turned out to be a wine cellar.
If it was one of Ben's three forbidden places...
The man who spoke just now...
A tall figure appeared in front of her before Gabrielle figured out who it could be.
"It's you?" Ben said in a chilly tone.
Gabrielle revealed her eyes while saying with a surprising look, "It's you?"
She was so excited that it was Ben instead of a horrid ghost.
His appearance was a solace to Gabrielle, who was frightened. At the moment, she felt that Ben did not seem that annoying anymore...
The man wore the same suit in the day. Two or three buttons of the white shirt collar were loosened. His hair was messy, with one hand holding a bottle of wine and the other a tall glass. His condescending face looked a little depressed.
Gabrielle stood still in surprise.
It was the first time she saw such a look on Ben's face since she knew him many years ago.
What had happened?
"What are you doing here?" Ben stared at her in an imposing manner.
