Chapter Nine
Devon woke up feeling useless he wanted to get up from his bed and use the restroom but he couldn't.he felt hopeless. The events of the past two days playing over in his head.
"Man, this sucks big time." He said to himself.
If someone had told him he will be stuck in a wheelchair he would have at least left a punch on the person's face.but here he was looking helpless. He got his job taking and all his plans gone. It's been a while he had felt this helpless the last time he had felt like this was five years ago when he lost his aunt Maya. She had been his only parent. When she died he had been devastated. Music had been the only thing to keep him going now he can't even perform.
Trying not to dwell too much on his negative thoughts, He tried to at least sit up but he couldn't do that either, the lower part of his body was partially dead. From his waist down felt useless. The reality of his situation dawn on him again and he couldn't keep the tears away he let them drop. Crying wasn't a sign of weakness.
Wiping his tears he tries to get up once again this time he succeeded but his lower part was still numb. He decided calling for help will be the best solution cuz he didn't want to pee on himself.
He picked up the phone Mark had left beside his bed and pressed the speed dial number.
A few moments later a knock came and the door opened he expected to see either Mark or Dan but it was the beautiful nurse that came in instead. Yeah, she was a beauty. He couldn't deny that the more he saw of her the more she became beautiful in his eyes
She had long flowing hair which had been previously hidden in ponytails but right now it was left down making her even more pretty. He hadn't gotten the time to properly assess her full beauty but the little he had allowed himself to he was amazed.
"Good morning, do you need anything?" She greeted and asked.
He was embarrassed but he figured she was the one in charge of him and also that it would be more embarrassing to pee on his bed at twenty-eight.
"Yeah, I need to pee but I can't get up." He disclosed.
"It's would be like that for a couple of days more you newly had surgery compound with the fact that you went through lots of stress yesterday after only a few hours of having the surgery."
She explained while helping him up and getting him in his wheelchair.
"Thank you so much," he said when she was done.
"You are welcome,"
She replied smiling. She had a beautiful smile too.
"Your smile is very pretty,"
he told her and she blushed.
"Thanks," came a tiny reply.
She helped him move to the bathroom and gave him privacy. When he was done he used the opportunity to brush his teeth. When he came back to his bedroom she was sitting on the sofa in the room.
"Thanks again Nurse you can go now sorry I woke you up. I don't need to get back on the bed." He said.
"No, you didn't wake me up I was already awake and it is almost 6 am, no need for me to go back to bed." She replied.
"Okay, if you say so."
"I would like us to go over the routine." She explained
"Okay, I am listening." He said turning his attention to her.
"This is the first time I am handling someone close to my age as my other patient had been people way older than me so forgive me if I start to treat you like an old man."
She said sounding serious but he couldn't take her serious cuz of how she said it. He laughed.
"Okay that's not part of the routine, I just had to say that." She explained.
"I know." he replied.
"First of all, for the next one week, you are gonna need all the support you can get. Because you will need someone to help you get up from your bed and also someone to assist you in getting somethings done. That's my job. I will help you in doing most of the things you regularly do yourself like... Your manager can assist you if you feel uncomfortable me."
She added, maybe cus of the way he was staring at her. When he didn't say anything, she continued.
"Secondly, this is very important as I may not know how you are feeling if you don't let me know, so if you feel any sign of discomforts like Loss of muscle strength or numbness in the leg or foot. A certain amount of strength loss is common because of the pain of the fracture, but if there is a rapid development of numbness or worsening of strength, or a significant increase in pain unrelieved by your pain medication, these may be signs of a "compartment syndrome." So please do let me know when you feel the slightest discomfort, even if you feel it's not relevant." She explained.
He nodded and she continued talking.
"Usually, an orthopedic surgeon does a follow up on you for a week before you get discharged but since you are a VIP who can't stay at the hospital, I was sent instead. I am to report to the hospital every development. As they will send a doctor down if any compilation is noticed. It would be best if you tell me immediately to get help on time as the distance between here and the hospital is kinda far."
"I understand Nurse,"
he replied when she looked at him.
"Hmm, I think that's all for now,"
She said getting up from the sofa.
"I will get Mark to help you clean up and then you can eat and take your medications. For the next couple of days, all you need to do is rest. No overthinking or overdoing anything." She added.
"Can I at least write songs or listen to music? " He asked.
"Yeah, sure you can do that. Music is healing so yeah."
"Thanks, Nurse." he answered.
"Laura," came her reply
"What?"
He asked not getting what she meant
"Laura you can call me Laura." she explained
Wow, finally he got the privilege to call her by her name. Progress. he thought to himself
"Okay, thanks, Laura." He said.
"One more thing she said turning back to face him. Someone said she will hunt me down if I didn't treat you properly so I am gonna do my best and she also said to tell you that be fine." She disclosed.
"Who is that?" he asked
"Hmm, a friend and a collegue of mine who is your fan." She replied.
"Oh,"
"Yeah," said.
"What about you? are you my fan? He asked.
"Sorry I didn't know you existed until yesterday so nope I am not a fan, but.....* Okay bye."
She said and left the room probably because of his shocked expression. He wanted to know what she was about to say. But she already left before he could ask he made a mental note to ask her when he see her again.
She didn't know who he was before yesterday? Wow, that was new, maybe he is not be as popular as he believed he was.
This is the first time he heard someone say they don't know him. He felt hurt, his pride was hurt. He always thought he was popular at least in his state everyone knew him but maybe he thought wrong. Or she could be lying he thought. Trying to console himself. Shaking off the thought he wheeled himself to his reading table and picked up the book he was reading the last time he came here, which was two months ago.
