Chapter 14 I'm Not that Weak as You Imagined
When Lori woke up from her nightmare, it was already eight o'clock in the morning.
Suffering from the aftershock, she gasped and looked at the white ceiling. The decisiveness, aggressiveness, and defiance had been given way to sorrow and terror in her cat's eyes.
"What's wrong?"
Clifford had been taking care of Lori, who was having a high fever all night. He just took a nap and soon heard movements from the sickbed.
He reached out his hand to touch her forehead. Luckily, the fever finally subsided.
Lori looked blankly at Clifford, "What are you doing here?" Her throat was dry, and her voice hoarse.
Arching his eyebrow, Clifford didn't answer her question.
"What would you like to eat?"
Lori didn't answer. She wanted his love rather than sympathy.
Taking out of his phone, Clifford was going to make a call.
"If you are doing this out of guilt, then save it. I'm not that weak as you imagined!"
"Can't argue with a patient!"
The corner of her mouth curved up in mockery, and she squinted at Clifford with her cat's eyes.
"A few days ago, I accompanied your woman to receive surgery here. Now I'm lying here, so we are even!"
Clifford glared at Lori's thin neck. If she dared to spit another word, he was not sure if he would strangle her. Last night, he deterred a rival in love and felt quite unhappy. Now, she dared to challenge his bottom line!
He chose to turn away, get out of the ward, and call the housekeeper in the ancestral house to stew some soup and send it over. It should take some time. After a moment of consideration, he made another call and then went back to the ward.
Lori's face remained icy.
Actually, except for the pale color, her delicate face was flawless.
Back then, when they were little, she was always clingy, following him and calling out his nickname. Then she called him by his full name. After the marriage resister, she called him by his given name. But now...
He pulled over a chair and sat in front of the bed, "I've arranged the company's business, so focus on your recovery!"
"Thank you very much!"
Clifford narrowed his slanted eyes and rubbed the scar at the end of his eyebrow, determined not to wrestle with her.
All of a sudden...
"Give me your phone!"
"Why?"
Clifford blurted out and then handed his phone to her.
Lori squinted at him and dialed a number. In the meanwhile, she scorned, "Don't worry, I will not use your phone to call my sweetheart in front of you!"
"I'd like to know the bold guy!"
Until Clifford turned away again, Lori finally felt relieved a bit.
He should have been keeping her company all night.
After Clark answered the call, Lori briefed her about her basic condition and then hung up.
After the doctor came over for another round of examination, Clifford followed him out.
Half an hour later, the door of the VIP single room was pushed open. With a thermal lunch box, Clifford came in, followed by another man.
"Wow, Cliff, you are hiding a beauty again?"
Lori didn't even need to look to identify the man who talked slovenly. Except for Owen Dulles, Clifford's crony, no one would dare to joke like this.
Dressed in a handmade apricot suit and brown leather shoes, Owen looked like a sunshine boy, and his smile looked very ambiguous. Owen was Clifford's childhood friend. When he came back from his overseas study, he was arranged in a branch by Clifford. But Lori knew that was just Clifford's trick. He wanted more than these.
Carrying a few paper bags, Owen walked to Lori's sickbed and put his gift on the sofa in front of the bed. It was several sets of clothes.
He sized Lori's pale face up and smacked his lips, "Little sister-in-law, you are playing big this time! If you are so desperate again, wouldn't Cliff be a widower?"
"Damn! You are a widower!"
Clifford opened the lid of the thermal lunch box, inside which was fresh millet porridge that Owen bought from the time-honored Law's Congee. Owen implied that if Lori continued to struggle, she would lose her life. As soon as he heard that, anger was boiling in his chest.
