Mike's mellow voice immediately came from the other end of the line. "How dare you run away from me?"

Mary felt slightly guilty as she had taken the man's phone. "Sir, I'll give your stuff back to you soon. Before that, however, could you please lend it to me for a few days?"

Mike answered her straightforwardly in an angry voice, "No! Come back immediately. Immediately!"

Mary hung up, her heart pounding violently.

After sitting quietly for a good while, she finally came back to her senses.

She had to go out to buy birth control pills and some clothes.

For fear that she might meet people she did not want to encounter, Mary bought a hat to shelter her face from being seen.

She used the money her cousin had transferred to her to pay the bills.

For the next two days, Mary stayed in the small room at the hostel.

Scott called her during the period and comforted her one more time that he would come back immediately after all the paperwork.

Mary consoled herself that there was at least one person who still cared about her. Her father had been away from her for twelve years. Anna Lee, her aunt, told her that the money her father had left behind was not close to sufficient.

She thought, "Even though that's true, I can pay back the money they invest in me when I enter the workplace. Why do they sell me to that man!"

"Uncle Frank has always been nice to me. How could he have nodded at Eric Carter's request? How much money has that man given Uncle Frank to convince him to push me into the fire pit? He and Aunt Anna must have been aware of the fact that Mia actually drugged me on that cruise ship. Otherwise, she would not have gotten the guts."
