Chapter 13 The Woman He loved
Snapping back from shock, Sara waved her hands hurriedly. "Grandpa, I can't take your shares."
Hearing that, Lilith said hastily, "Dad, now that she doesn't want it, you don't need to give her. Besides, it's been three years since she married Kent. There must be something wrong with her health, or she should have given birth. I told you we couldn't let her be Kent's wife, but you didn't listen to me. On the wedding night, she even..."
Before she could finish her words, Elliott interrupted furiously, "Enough! No more about that. Besides, you have no right to intervene in my decision! In this family, it's not up to you to tell me what to do. Humph!"
She opened her mouth, but she dared to say no more. The atmosphere became tense again.
After a while, Kent said coldly, "Grandpa, if you really want a great-grandson, I can give you one with another woman. Anyway, I won't let Sara White have my child."
Elliott's face fell. He grabbed the ashtray on the table and threw it at Kent angrily. Kent should have dodged as usual, but this time, he didn't compromise.
"Ah!" When the ashtray was about to knock him, Janet pounced onto him and got hit on her shoulder! She screamed out of pain!
"Janet!" Elliott shouted nervously. At this moment, his secret was exposed on his face–there were anxiety and love in his eyes, an expression not from a brother. When Sara wanted to see his face closely, he had resumed his calmness, but his hands were still veined while holding Janet. It was an omen of a rainstorm.
Janet lifted her head and gazed at Kent with her watery eyes. Softly, she said, "Kent, I'm fine. Don't worry."
"How could you be fine? It's such a heavy ashtray! Your shoulder must be swollen. Go upstairs and let me have a look at it." After casting a glare at Sara, Lilith took Janet's hand and walked upstairs.
Kent rose and wanted to follow upstairs, but Elliott required him to stay.
"I was not joking. If you don't treat Sara well, you'll have nothing," Elliott said in a frigid tone.
Kent pressed his lips and said indifferently, "Grandpa, what has she done to bewitch you? Why do you like her so much? She's just a tarnished woman! It disgusts me to touch her!"
Hearing his heartless words, Sara felt like her heart was broken into pieces by a sharp arrow. She rose and said to Elliott seriously, "Grandpa, I know how kind you're to me, but I really don't need the shares. If Kent doesn't want to have a child with me, I'm willing to quit."
Elliott looked at her with a frown. "Sara, what do you mean?"
Sara bore the pain and took a deep breath. "If Kent wants to divorce me, I can sign."
"No!" Elliott objected immediately. He put his hands against his chest and began coughing violently.
"Grandpa, please don't be angry..." She ran her hand on Elliott's back hurriedly. Seeing the old man's sour face, Kent also didn't dare to say anything more. He had a glance at Sara in surprise that she would agree to divorce.
Elliott held Sara's hands in his. "Don't mention divorce again. I'm too old to bear such a heavy blow. Can you promise me?"
Slowly, Sara nodded. During these years, her only comfort was from Elliott's kindness. For this amiable old man, she was willing to suffer all the pain.
At dinner, Elliott required Sara and Kent to stay here for a night. To her surprise, Kent didn't oppose this time, which made her confused and nervous.
Sitting on the soft bed, Sara lowered her long eyelashes as she heard the flowing water in the bathroom. Uneasy and uptight, she wrung the hem of her clothes.
Although she was Kent's wife, they seldom stayed alone in a bedroom.
After a moment, he walked out of the bathroom. When she looked up at him, her comely face suddenly became red.
There was merely a bath towel around his waist. He was strong and tall, and his tan skin shone with health and charm under the white light. Drops of water fell from his black hair, flowed to his chest, and meandered along his muscular belly to the white towel... Sara, who had never seen such a scene, felt a missed beat of her heart.
Seeing her little face as fiery as the July sun, he said coldly, "Don't look like you've never seen a man. It's disgusting."
Feeling strong heartache, she closed her slightly-red eyes. When she looked up at him again, she had recovered her calmness. In a flat tone, she asked, "Can we talk?"
"Talk? Humph!" he sneered. "What can we talk about? You think you can secure your position with grandpa's support? You're such a dreamer! Hahaha!"
"Kent Fitch, I do like you, but I never want to constrain you with marriage. If you don't like me, why did you propose to me? Why did you let me marry you?" Finally, she asked the questions that were hidden deep in her heart. After the scandal on the wedding night, she had also considered divorce, but neither Elliott nor Kent agreed. She thought, as time went by, Kent would slowly accept her. But now, she realized that it was literally an unreachable dream. He didn't care about her, not even a bit.
In his heart, she had been a sly woman. Although she looked delicate, she could coax his grandpa into doing everything for her, which proved her hypocrisy. He wouldn't be cheated by her gentle and innocent appearance.
"Sara White, I may as well tell you the truth. I love a woman, and she's back from abroad. I'm ready to make her my wife."
He took up a cigarette on the nightstand and lit it up. Narrowing his eyes, he drew heavily on it. As the white smoke veiled his figure, his face seemed to soften. "This time, I won't let go of her hand again. I won't let anyone hurt her again."
With a contemptuous glance at Sara, he went on with smoking.
She nipped her palms with fingernails, trying to stay calm. But his words were just like a saw rubbing violently against her heart. The pain was so great that her blood stirred and her face went pale.
Only after a long while did she find her voice, "Who... who is she?" Her voice was so hoarse that even she couldn't recognize it.
