Chapter 7 You Can't Afford to Mess with This Man
"Huh?" Candice shivered in fright, "Yes, sir?"
Mervyn narrowed his eyes and slightly opened his thin lips, "Rubbish!"
Huh? Candice trembled. How could he curse people so randomly?
She paled in anger but didn't dare to say anything. According to Mr. Steele, this was an important guest!
Richard was the only one who understood his implication.
Losing no time, he walked to Mr. Steele and whispered, "Our boss means that rubbish... should stay where it belongs. Mr. Steele, what do you think?"
"Uh... yeh."
Stunned, Mr. Steele also changed countenance.
"Candice, get out! Take a look at yourself; you're tarnishing our guest's eyes!"
Poof...
Her colleagues around couldn't help laughing out.
... Candice turned livid and pale before eying Steve for help.
Steve, however, didn't look at her but frowned. His gaze moved back and forth between Mervyn and Harriet.
"Make way!" Ashamed and indignant, Candice ran away with her head low.
Mervyn looked back at Harriet. His gaze was blunt and abstruse.
"No one is allowed to get his hands on her! Cater to her needs."
Shocked, people looked at Harriet at the same time. What was her relationship with this important guest?
Harriet was also stunned. Why did he act like this? Could he be the same man from that night? Did he recognize her?
He protected her out of their friendship forged that night? If a one-night stand was sort of friendship...
Mr. Steele beat the others to respond, "Yes, definitely... rest assured."
Yuck...
Mervyn curled up his lips, chuckled faintly, turned around, and got back to the conference room.
"Hey, Harriet... who's that guy?"
Her colleagues closed in and muttered with each other.
Harriet shook her head, "I don't know him neither."
"Why was he so protective of you then?"
"Hee hee, many people are protective of Harriet! After all, she is even prettier than those popular actresses!"
That was true. Every man would be fascinated by her appearance.
Someone in the know gossiped, "I don't know who he is but know that he's here for a draft!"
"Draft? Promoting high-flyers?"
"Yuck, when the rich mention promoting high-flyers, don't you understand their real meaning? Just for fun! Rumor has it that Mr. Steele has called in all the female artists; otherwise, why would such a large conference room be needed? Tsk-tsk, this man has a great appetite! He should be insatiable in that aspect!"
"Harriet, be careful. You can't afford to mess with this man..."
When Harriet listened to their discussions, her eyebrows furrowed slightly.
...
Back in the office, Mr. Olson repeatedly advised her to stay.
"Harriet, you see, there must be a misunderstanding! Why do you suddenly want to quit without any good reason? Did anyone upset you? If you want a break, you don't have to quit."
Harriet shook her head and insisted on submitting her resignation.
"It's not like that. I'm not upset but don't want to continue."
"Well..." Mr. Olson looked regretful, "Harriet, then... be sure to come back after your break. Your position in the company will be reserved."
Harriet shook her head with a smile, "That won't be necessary."
Her ambition didn't lie here, and she didn't want to face Steve again.
She packed up her things and got out of the office.
"Harriet!"
Steve caught up menacingly.
He questioned her, "You and that man, what's your relationship?"
Harriet couldn't help but laugh, "Why do you care?"
"Harriet!" Steve gritted his teeth and sulked, "Admit it! You and that man are maintaining a special relationship, aren't you? Otherwise, why did he stand up for you?"
