Chapter 5 A Big Misunderstanding
At the police station...
As Bree stepped out of the station after giving a statement, a vehicle flashed by. It stopped before her abruptly, making a shrill noise.
"Quentin?"
"Bree? What are you doing here?"
"I called in a burglary and have just made a statement." Bree answered and then asked, "What about you? Didn't you say you had something important to do?"
He seemed to be in a hurry, though. But what kind of vital business needed him to come to the police station?
Quentin came here after receiving a call from Leo. Though he did not understand why his friend who had returned home early ended up at the police station, he rushed over as soon as he was notified.
Wait!
"What did you say? A thief entered your home?"
A foreboding rose in Quentin's heart.
"Yeah, let me tell you..."
Just as Bree was about to go into detail with Quentin, the interrogation room door was pushed open, and two men stepped out.
A middle-aged man in a police uniform said, "Mr. Lewis, I'm sorry about this misunderstanding."
"What misunderstanding? Why did you let him out?"
Bree could not be bothered to talk to Quentin when she saw the man being let out.
Standing next to the woman, Quentin saw the man she had called a "burglar," and his eyelids trembled.
"Leo?!"
"You know him?"
Bree was stunned, and her brain was at high speed. However, before she could think it through, the cop interrupted her.
"Lady, you're ridiculous. How could you send your husband to the station as a burglar?"
What the hell?!
Seeing Bree's shocked and confused expression, the middle-aged cop scolded her harshly.
"It's common for couples to have quarrels in daily life, but you shall never report a false case! It's against the law, you understand?"
"I'm not..."
"Are you trying to tell me that you don't know what your husband looks like?"
"I..." She really had no idea of her husband's appearance.
"That's it. Every couple has their fights. Apologize to your husband later. Then let it go. You hear me?"
"Also, don't forget to take your husband to the hospital for a check-up. Your attacks were too hard. What if something terrible happened?"
Bree listened to the policeman's lecture with a saddened face and got no chance to defend herself at all.
She felt aggrieved but did not know how to make it clear.
Quentin's situation was obviously no better than Bree's, and he was sweating under Leo's icy stare.
The policeman seemed to think that Bree's admission of guilt was a good one, and with a wave of his hand, he let her go.
"Well, let's go to the hospital for a check," Quentin suggested. He then hurried to get into the car as if his life depended on it.
Bree, sitting in the backseat, glanced at the man sitting in the passenger's seat from time to time.
She had no idea that he was the man she had married a month ago.
The thought of her beating her newly-married husband and taking him to the police station as a burglar made Bree want to dig a hole and bury herself inside.
The three of them arrived at the hospital in a stifling silence.
"Bree, why don't you enter the building first? Leo and I will park the car and then get to you."
Bree looked confused.
Was it necessary for the two to park the vehicle together?
However, she dared not ask or say anything.
Thinking that she had just knocked her husband out and sent him to the police station, Bree felt incredibly guilty.
At the parking lot...
After pulling up the car, Quentin organized his words inwardly and tried to explain to the other man.
"When she woke up from the surgery, she was found to have lost her memories. She forgot everything except her own name."
"So you lied to her and told her she was my wife?" Leo's expression was gloomy.
"Do you think I would have done so if you hadn't wanted to marry some woman randomly?" Quentin said with a righteous look in his eyes, "Don't you think it was from God's will? Right after you said that you needed a wife, she showed up and lost all her memories!"
"When did I say I was going to marry a woman randomly?"
"That day on the yacht!" Quentin said matter-of-factly, "Didn't you say you wanted the shares that Auntie Merilyn left you back?"
Leo inhaled and then looked at the other man patiently.
"If I remember correctly, you were the one talking that day from start to finish."
Quentin was dumbfounded.
He tried hard to recall the conversation on that day and then realized that it was all his misunderstanding that Leo would sacrifice his marriage to get his shares back...
Quentin thought to himself, "Hell, no! So, I am the villain from start to finish?"
Quentin gulped at the thought of the enormous mistake he had made.
"Well...What shall we do now?" Quentin was desperate.
Leo opened the door and got out of the car, ignoring the other man completely.
