Chapter 6 The Phone Call
"Miss Wells?"
"You are?" Bree looked in confusion at the young doctor in the white uniform before her.
"My last name is Rivers, and I operated on you the last time you were taken to the hospital," Joseph replied with a smile.
Bree immediately expressed her gratitude.
When Bree woke up in the sickroom the other day, she heard from the nurse that she was in a critical condition when she was brought to the hospital. It was doubtful whether she would have survived if it were not for the doctor in charge's excellent skills.
She was so grateful to the doctor that she wanted to thank him in person. However, she was told that Doctor Rivers had left the country to attend an international academic conference.
It was a delightful coincidence that she ran into him at present.
"I heard you're suffering from amnesia. It's probably due to a cerebral hemorrhage. For the sake of your health, you'd better come to the hospital for a physical examination regularly."
Joseph had seen her X-ray after he came back.
Unfortunately, the brain was too complicated. With current medical conditions, there was no way to remove the clot without damaging any nerves. They could only hope that the brain would automatically absorb and eliminate it.
"Okay, I see. Thanks again, Doctor Rivers."
Joseph nodded, suddenly pulled a small box out of his coat, and handed it to the woman.
"I found this in the operating room last time and thought it was yours."
Bree took the box curiously, but before she could open it, she saw Leo and Quentin.
"I've got to go now. See you around, then." Joseph saw the two as well, nodded at Bree, and left.
Bree stuffed the box in her pocket and walked over to the two men.
The test results came back quickly.
It was a mild concussion.
The doctor suggested Leo stay in the hospital for a day for observation, but he said no.
Quentin dropped them off and then slipped away on the pretext that he had work to do.
Bree blinked. When she came to her senses, there were only she and Leo left in the house.
Thinking of what had happened earlier in the day, Bree opened her mouth, wanting to say something to ease the awkwardness. Before she could say anything, the man's stomach rumbled all of a sudden.
Leo felt embarrassed.
So did Bree.
"You must be starving. Let me make you a bowl of noodles!" Bree got an idea and ran into the kitchen at speed without giving Leo a chance to say no.
Once in the kitchen, Bree breathed a sigh of relief, slapped her forehead, and tried to calm herself down. Then, she started to boil water for the noodles.
Hearing the sounds coming from the kitchen, Leo covered his aching stomach and furrowed his brows.
Soon, a bowl of steaming hot, fragrant chicken noodles soup was ready.
"You should eat it while it's hot, but be careful." Bree flatteringly handed the man a pair of chopsticks.
Leo glanced at the woman, took the chopsticks, and began to enjoy the noodles.
The noodles were strong and elastic, and the chicken soup was delicious. After finishing it, the man's initially aching stomach felt much more comfortable.
"Is it good?" Bree winked at Leo with an expectant look in her eyes.
Her eyes were bright and crystal-clear as if they were filled with spring water. Her curly eyelashes flickered like the wings of a butterfly, her pale face was covered with a proper layer of flush, and her pinkish lips were so full and moist that it seemed that waterdrops might fall at any time.
Leo's fingers trembled slightly.
"What's wrong? It's not good?" Bree was disappointed. She thought she was a pretty good cook and did not expect the man to be a picky diner.
The ringing of a cell phone interrupted Leo's attempt to speak.
Bree saw clearly that Leo's face darkened when he saw the number on the screen.
The phone kept ringing. Just when Bree thought Leo would not answer it, he picked it up.
Bree had no idea what the person at the other end of the line said but saw Leo's expression became gloomier and gloomier. Then, he hung up without answering a word.
Bree hesitated before asking, "Are you okay? Anything wrong?"
Leo fixed his eyes upon Bree's face.
The look in his eyes...
How to put it?
It was complicated.
So complicated that it was a little hard to read.
