Chapter 5 Sick Leave

"What's wrong?" Thomas became nervous immediately and could not help but ask.

"You'll know when you come." The cop hung up the phone.

"..."

Within half an hour, Thomas walked into the police station hurriedly.

"What's the matter with her, sir?"

"What's your relationship with the phone owner?"

The cops looked the man up and down and found he was decently-dressed. But with professional acumen, they didn't skip the questioning part for this stranger.

Thomas's brows furrowed even more deeply. "We're friends."

Well, friends... This was a word with a wide range of meanings. The cops couldn't help looking at him narrowly again, starting to guess their relationship.

"Sir, take it easy. This is just a routine inquiry. What's the phone owner's name?"

"Bella Halty." Thomas knitted his brows even harder.

It matched the name on the woman's ID card. The cops exchanged a look at each other.

"What happened to her?"

"See for yourself." A cop pointed his chin to one side.

Thomas turned his head and saw a woman lying on a bench by the wall. Her loose hair covered her face, and her sexy black slip dress appeared quite eye-catching in such a place.

At this moment, she was in a sound sleep with her head tilted. He pulled her messy hair away from her face, took off his windbreaker, and covered her body with it.

"She is drunk. Why is she here?" He turned around and asked the cops standing next to him.

The cops shrugged their shoulders with a "who knows" look.

Then, their gazes were all on the woman lying on the bench.

If Bella knew how inelegant she was before three men, she might want to commit suicide.

Feeling uncomfortable on the tough bench, Bella tried to change a posture. As she turned over, she almost fell onto the ground again. Just then, Thomas stepped forward at once and caught her body in his arms.

"Show your ID card for registration. Then you can take her back." The cops didn't want to waste their time on this kind of thing; the police force was very limited.

"Wait a minute. You need to pay for the taxi fare. It's 152 yuan in total." A cop stopped Thomas who was ready to carry Bella out.

Thomas took out 200 yuan from his wallet with a hand. "Keep the change. It's the tip for the driver."

When Bella woke up from a sweet dream, she stretched herself a little bit. What a comfortable sleep she had had!

Oh, no... This was not her own bedroom. White sheets and white pillowcases... Where was she? She was in the hotel!

Jesus Christ, when had she got here? She tried hard to recall, but in vain – her brain was like a rusty machine that couldn't move at all.

"Calm yourself down and just take the time," she whispered to herself. Shaking her head, she remained quiet for a while. Finally, her brain started to work: She remembered that she had walked out of the bar with Cindy, taken a taxi, and... Well, she couldn't remember what happened after that.

The night, the taxi driver, and the hotel...

All of these fragments formed a shockingly terrible event. She was too scared to think further about that.

In a panic, she lifted a corner of the quilt. Thankfully, she was still wearing her dress.

She walked barefoot on the floor, looking for her shoes. Only then did she realize that her stockings had been taken off by someone.

She scanned the whole room swiftly and found her handbag on the nightstand and a men's windbreaker on a chair beside the bed.

On the nightstand was also a piece of paper that read: Remember to eat light and drink less!

The vigorous and forceful handwriting was obviously from a man.

Could a taxi driver write so well?

Terrified to keep thinking about that, she grabbed the windbreaker, put on the hotel's disposable slippers, and took her handbag. Then, she slipped away like a thief through the back door of the hotel.

It had cleared up outside. The sun hung in the sky, bathing the streets in its bright light. The rays shed through the leaves above the sidewalks, glistering just like stars and warming every pass-by.

Feeling wrapped by heated gas, Bella took off the windbreaker, revealing her bare neck and arms. Passers-by couldn't help casting a look at her – her black slip dress was too eye-catching in the bright day. Helplessly, she could only put on the coat again.

When she got home, she dashed into the bathroom and saw in the mirror a woman with a messy look. The false eyelashes on one eye had dropped, and the other was just hanging over there. Her makeup was an utterly miserable sight.

After getting cleaned up, she took out her phone from her handbag; the phone had been off for some time. She charged the phone for a while, switched it on, and saw several missed calls from Cindy.

"Only now do you remember to call me! Come clean! Who was the man with you last night?" Cindy asked in a teasing tone.

The man with her last night? She also wanted to know who he was.

"Humph, Bella, it seems you're more capable than I thought. You hooked up with a man right after I left! How do you feel about your one-night stand? Be honest with me!"

"What man?" Bella played the fool.

"Don't trick me. Last night I called you as soon as I got home, and a man answered the phone. Who was he? His voice sounded pretty young." Cindy might explode if Bella didn't satisfy her growing curiosity.

"Stop guessing. I just lost my phone and someone picked it." Bella didn't want to talk nonsense with Cindy. She had several classes today.

She hurried to the school which was not far from her home.

"Miss Halty, haven't you asked for sick leave today?" Ms. Hall asked in confusion as she saw Bella.

"Sick leave? Oh, I feel better now." Bella realized something quickly. When had she asked for sick leave? Why couldn't she remember anything last night? Had she lost her memory?

"You look so pale and should have a good rest at home. I've already switched your class with Miss Cook's." Ms. Hall, about 40 years old, was a teaching director. She was serious about everything, but now, there was rare affability on her face.

"It's not a big deal. Thank you." Bella smirked.

"The man who helped you ask for leave is your boyfriend, right? When can you introduce him to us?" Ms. Hall asked with a smile.

"Well... I have to go now. The bell rang..." Bella escaped right away.

All the teachers in this school knew that Bella didn't have a boyfriend. Who, except for a father, would help her ask for leave? The answer was obvious.

Bella felt quite dizzy for a whole day; she really couldn't figure out what had happened.
