Chapter 13 You Have Become Evil

"Have you finished the report on Sea City's project?" Edwin's icy voice interrupted Cliff, who was acting like Sherlock Holmes.

After a short pause, Cliff replied, "Seriously? Did you even listen to what I've told you? Do you have to be a killjoy, my brother?"

"You don't have to be responsible for that project!"

"No, no! I'll do it, I'll do it..." Sensing the coldness Edwin gave off even through the line, Cliff hung up with a disappointed expression, furrowing his brows. "What's wrong with him?"

After getting rid of his annoying brother, Edwin tilted his head to look out of the window. However, his mind was occupied by memories of five years ago, and he wondered whether Effie really cared about him or not.

On the other hand, the moment Effie saw her grandmother, who she had not seen for a long time, she hugged Grandma tightly, and her eyes reddened in an instant.

Suffering from Alzheimer's disease, Grandma often misknew people. However, she recognized Effie clearly.

"Effie, my girl. Why are you crying? Tell Grandma who has made you sad? I will avenge you!"

At Grandma's words, Effie broke into a smile, replying, "That's not necessary, Grandma. I am a tough girl now, and no one can ever hurt me."

"Really? Has my Effie become this powerful?"

"Totally." Effie wiped her tears away and revealed a confident look in her eyes. "And I can also protect Grandma! I will let whoever makes Grandma sad live in misery."

At Effie's promise, Herman rolled his eyes secretly. Though many years have passed, his sister was still essentially somewhat unreliable. She was simply a bigger talker than Herman.

At the same time, however, Herman admired his sister's confidence.

"Effie, tell me what you've been doing over these years. Where the hell does this little guy come from? Is he really your son?"

"Obviously! You don't think he is a random boy I picked up from the street, do you?" After glancing at Herman, Effie turned to look at Nolan, who was playing jigsaw with Dylan, saying, "Oh right, this is Nolan, a friend of mine. He helped me a lot when I was in M Country."

Herman nodded, replying, "Nolan and I have got to know each other while you and Grandma were crying. Also, I learned that..." He deliberately lowered his voice and leaned in closer to Effie, continuing, "He is single, right?"

"Yes, but why? You like him?" Effie looked at her brother with an evil grin, saying, "I can confess your feelings for him on behalf of you if that's what you need."

Herman gushed out a mouthful of water, saying, "Effie! You have become evil."

"I thought I've become smarter." With that, Effie laughed heartily.

Witnessing the intimate interaction between Effie and Herman, Nolan said with a doting smile, "You smile much more often since you've returned home from abroad."

"I know. After all, this is my home." Effie took a deep breath and looked around at the shabby place, feeling slightly sorry inside.

She eventually came back after five years.

Although she had been away for so long, nothing had changed, including Grandma and her brother. This made all her past decisions worthwhile.

"Let's have dinner before the dishes get cold." Sensing the change in Effie's mood, Nolan smartly diverted the topic.

At this moment, Dylan walked over to Effie with an aggrieved expression and the receipt his mother brought back, complaining, "Mom, I don't think you've bought cheese."

"Really? Did I forget to buy it?" Effie took the receipt over and confirmed what Dylan said was true, then said, "Don't worry, babe. Mommy will go downstairs to buy some right away."

"Let me do it for you." Nolan looked at the woman with a worried look in his eyes.

"No, thanks. I'll be right back!" With that, Effie walked out of the room.

After closing the door, Effie took a deep breath to force herself to forget about the haunting past. Then, she walked outside.

Just then, a man showed up in the corridor with his back on Effie, blocking her way.

Effie bypassed the man and continued walking outwards.

Then, a cold yet familiar voice came from her behind. "It seems that you are doing quite well."
