Chapter 16 That Was Simple and Somewhat Crude
"Star Entertainment wants to sign a permanent cooperation agreement with Miss Fletcher and purchase all works under Miss Fletcher's name, including those currently on the market and those to be written in the future. That is to say, from the signing of this contract, Star Entertainment owns every word you write. Of course, the remuneration is unprecedentedly huge!"
Effie was shocked.
For a writer, perhaps nothing could bring him or her more excitement than her works' being recognized, especially in an era when the market was uncertain and the audience's preferences were unpredictable. Such an offer in front of Effie was simply a great encouragement and recognition for her.
Apart from the earning, Effie's reputation would increase significantly if she became a cooperative writer of Star Entertainment, a huge company in this industry. And, of course, her status would improve hugely.
However, how come such luck fell upon her, a currently noteless writer?
Indeed, what Effie had achieved by far was quite impressive. Still, it should not qualify her to be chosen by Cliff for this.
Even if she was qualified, it happened so fast.
"Besides, our company will pay you 500,000 as a reward and provide a villa to assist your creation..."
"But why?" Effie could not help but ask, "There are many writers better than me. Why are you choosing me?"
"Because I like your writing style and simply every single word under your pen. Yes, there are other excellent writers, but..." Cliff flashed a gentle smile and looked at the woman with a frank look in his eyes."I don't like their works."
At the simple and somewhat crude explanation, Effie furrowed her brows slightly.
"Do you have any scruples? Or are you dissatisfied with the conditions given by Star Entertainment?"
"I..."
The phone ringing abruptly interrupted Effie. She lowered her head to check the caller ID and said, "Sorry, I have to take this." Then, she quickly walked out of the conference room.
"Effie, something bad happened to Grandma." Herman's slightly trembling voice came from the other end of the line. "She went out to look for you and was hit by a car. Now she is being rescued in the hospital."
"What?" Effie's face went pale instantly.
"The doctor told me that she is in danger and the surgery needs a lot of blood...and...a lot of money!" Herman's voice was tearful. Apparently, he was worried.
"No matter how much money it is, I..."
"It's one million!" Herman eventually cried out loud.
Effie froze in an instant, repeating, "One million?"
"Where do we get such a huge sum of money? Effie, what shall we do? Grandma is still in the operating room. The doctor said if there is no money, they can only give up the operation. I..."
"Never give it up, never!"
"But, the money..."
"I'll find a way to fix this!" Effie wiped away the tears in her eyes, and her panicked expression immediately became composed. "Carry out the surgery for Grandma. I will bring money over right away!" With that, she turned back to the conference room without waiting for Herman to respond.
Cliff was playing with his mobile phone and looked up when the woman pushed the door open.
Upon seeing Effie's pale countenance and reddish eyes, the man paused for one second, then asked, "Is everything alright?"
"When can I collect that 500,000?" Effie looked at Cliff with a serious expression.
Cliff froze for an instant and replied, "Anytime!"
At the answer, Effie picked up the pen and signed her name on the contract, saying, "I want it now!"
"No problem!" With that, Cliff picked up his mobile phone and operated on his online banking. After a short while, he looked up at Effie, saying, "The money will reach you in an hour. Remember to check!"
"Thank you!" After expressing her gratitude, Effie turned to run out of the meeting room.
Cliff followed up with the woman somewhat worriedly, "Is there anything I help with?"
"You have already helped me!" Effie cast a grateful glance at the man, then entered the elevator without looking back.
Until Effie's back disappeared, Cliff remembered to report what had happened to his brother.
"Edwin, Effie has signed it! It went smoothly, and none of those alternatives played a part."
"l see."
"But, forgive my curiosity, if you really want to help her, don't think that sum of money is too little? I mean, you should at least give her five million. And the villa..."
