Chapter 18 Being Enchanted
"You?" Looking into Edwin's fascinating eyes, Effie's heart skipped a beat. For an instant, a thunderbolt exploded in her mind, and she could not say a word.
"Miss Isabella..." Edwin stared at the woman with an indifferent look in his eyes as if nothing had happened between them, then extended his hand gently. "I wish...our cooperation a pleasant one!"
Effie's brain buzzed, and her body froze as if she had been cursed.
Seeing that Effie did not respond for a good while, Katie tugged at her coat in confusion. "Isla?"
"Huh?" Effie came to her senses and realized that people around were all looking at her. She looked up at the man, who haunted her several days ago, appeared like a king on high at this moment. Slowly, she extended her hand, replying, "Happy...cooperation!"
When their hands touched, Effie was not sure whether it was her illusion or not, but she actually saw a strange, crafty smile emerge upon the man's icy expression.
In an instant, her back broke out in a cold sweat.
"Hey, are you enchanted or what?" Katie looked at Effie, who did not recover after the boss left for a long while, with a smug expression on her face. "Now you know what I was talking about. Our boss is..."
"Wait for a second!" Effie tilted her head to look at the other woman in puzzlement. "Did you say that man is your boss?"
"Yeah!"
"But isn't he the owner of the Bennett Group? How can he be the owner of Star Entertainment as well?"
"Well, that's where you're clueless about. Star Entertainment is part of the Bennett Group, and in fact, Star Entertainment is currently managed by the big boss' brother, President Cliff, who you've met before."
Learning the news that Star Entertainment was part of the Bennett Group, Effie could not help but skip a heartbeat.
Edwin was the manager of the Bennett Group.
Which meant...
Effie turned her head in horror to look at the man who was talking to someone not far away, and even his back was frosty. Her heart instantly sank to the bottom.
She was so finished.
"President Cliff..."
Katie's voice interrupted Effie's flow of thought, and she looked up at the handsome man in a dark red suit, whose countenance was slightly pinkish, and felt extremely upset.
Cliff and Edwin looked quite alike. Why had not Effie noticed this point earlier?
"Sorry, I got stuck in a traffic jam." Cliff walked over to Effie with a bright smile, saying, "Sis...Miss Fletcher, you've been waiting for me a while, right?"
"Waiting for you?" Effie looked puzzled. What did the man's words mean?
"Right..." He turned his head to look at the center of the crowd and glanced at his brother before turning to Effie again, saying, "I forgot to give this to you when you signed the contract." With that, he handed over a key to the woman. "The key to that villa."
"Well..." Effie looked at the key and, for the first time, felt something that related to money like a hot potato, replying, "Forget the villa. I have a place to stay."
Cliff directly stuffed the key into Effie's hand before she could finish her words. "It's all on the contract. I never renege. And you can't refuse it either. Otherwise, it'll be a violation of the agreement."
Effie hesitated for a second, then took it. "Thank you, President Cliff." She decided that taking the key and moving into the villa were two different stories.
Anyway, she told herself to go around anything related to Edwin to not get into trouble.
"Call me Cliff in the future. We're family, so let's skip all the unnecessary, overelaborate courtesy."
"Family?" Katie was puzzled, wondering when President Cliff had become such an affable person.
Effie was even more stunned. Had Cliff learned anything?
Or...
"Lady, would you like to dance with me?" A man walked up to Effie.
Just as she was about to turn him down, Cliff's voice sounded from her behind. "Sorry, she's not available."
Witnessing what was going on, Katie paused for a second, then glanced at Cliff and Effie, then nursed some gossipy guesses inside.
Later, two more men came over to ask Effie to dance, but Cliff refused both of them on behalf of his sister-in-law. Katie, an experienced woman, could not maintain her composure.
Katie leaned in closer to Effie's ear and was about to pry into details when the latter's cell phone suddenly rang.
"Excuse me. I have to take this." Effie flashed a gentle smile, then walked to one side.
One minute later, she came back in a hurry, saying, "I'm sorry, but something urgent is going on at home. I have to leave now. If there are any problems with the script, feel free to contact me. Bye!" With that, she turned to leave.
"Let me give you a ride." Cliff chased after the woman.
"No, thanks." Effie curled up her lips slightly and kept walking outwards.
"Isla, take care out there."
Staring at Effie's departing back, Katie eventually could not curb her curiosity and inquisitiveness, asking, "President Cliff, do you have a crush on Isabella?"
